Ethiopia Advances in Irrigation Infrastructure with 28 New Dams

Addis Ababa: Ethiopia is making significant strides in enhancing its irrigation capabilities, with the construction of 28 new irrigation dams across the nation. The Ministry of Irrigation and Lowland Environment has dedicated over 8 billion birr to these projects, with an ambitious goal to partially complete 13 dams by the end of this fiscal year. These new dams are set to develop approximately 2,450 hectares of land for irrigation purposes, marking a substantial increase in the country's agricultural productivity.

In addition to these ongoing constructions, Ethiopia is also exploring the potential for further expansion. A feasibility study is underway for 27 additional irrigation dams, which, if realized, could develop a remarkable 103 thousand hectares of land. The study for seven of these proposed dams is expected to conclude within the current year, and these projects will be spread across seven regions of Ethiopia, signifying a nationwide commitment to agricultural development.

Furthermore, the country is investing in the maintenance and repair of its existing irrigation infrastructure. Key projects include the Kobo Girana Groundwater Irrigation Development Project, the Alwero irrigation system, and various other small to medium-sized dams. To aid farmers, the ministry has distributed solar-powered irrigation water pumping motors, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural practices.

Pleased to meet with His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz in a bilateral meeting this afternoon where we discussed bilateral and regional matters including Ethiopia’s development and economic reforms as well as the role played by Ethiopia in the region. Our two countries have many strategic interests to cooperate on and to this end we have reached an understanding to establish a high level joint ministerial committee; for Saudi support on Ethiopia’s macroeconomic reforms through debt restructuring; energy cooperation and development finance and investments.
