StatCan says inflation is “steady” at 3%. Drivers aren’t buying it. Gasoline was up 22.8% year over year in August. Take gas out and the CPI is only 2.4%. Commuters are carrying the average so Ottawa can sound calm.

Pointing at the Middle East and calling pressures “contained” doesn’t fill a tank. Federal fuel taxes and climate levies still sit on top of a global shock. Households get the receipt, not the talking points.

Cut federal fuel taxes while pump prices are this elevated. Stop selling 3% as affordability when getting to work costs nearly a quarter more than last year.

Canada still needs between 417,000 and 469,000 housing starts a year to get back to pre-pandemic affordability. Toronto alone needs starts up at least 50% over the next decade. CMHC says ownership construction is exceptionally weak while rental dominates.

Softer demand should be the moment we catch up. Instead construction is slowing faster than demand. Underbuild now and the next rush leaves us further short. Speeches about affordability do not pour concrete.
