I watched a peer presentation on teaching Native American students today! Something I learned is that when Native Americans first discovered and settled in the area where the current day US is, they traveled over a now-destroyed land bridge from Asia to get to it. #gccedu
Today, I watched a peer presentation on teaching Arab students! Something I learned that I didn't know before is that Arab parents use an authoritarian style of parenting. Their kids respect them, and the father is the head of the household always. #gccedu
Today I got to watch a presentation on teaching homeless students by one of my peers! Something I learned was that students who live with friends are still considered homeless, and doubled-up homes make up 74% percent of where homeless students live! I didn't know that. #gccedu
I watched a presentation on teaching Latino students! @HGangewer did a great job! I learned today that Latino cultures are fatalistic. They see you as in the same societal position your whole life, so they don't see you as able to to move up/advance through hard work. #gccedu
From creating my lesson about teaching Asian American students, I learned that Asian parents are very involved in their kids' education and most enroll them in extra programs to help them get ahead. Asian schools' kids also are above grade level by 2.5yrs (in comp to US)! #gccedu
@chrisemdin I recently started reading your book! I was wondering what tips you have for new teachers on building enough confidence to start cogens and cultivate a learning environment for both the teacher and students. I love your ideas and am excited to implement them! #gccedu
1/2 Currently, there is a revolution in the US - a revolution of race and equality. It has always been in the background, but now there is more open dialogue about how to actively combat racism. As teachers, we need to fight for the rights of ALL of our students and ensure that
2/2 we teach EVERY student and teach about many cultures instead of solely Eurocentric canon. The voices, stories, and contributions of all cultures show the beauty of God's creation, and our students are wonderfully created and deserve equal education. https://t.co/P8nVPnpZUj
2/2 turn a blind eye. We need to be ready to work extra hard to help our students who need it most when they return to schools by providing emotional and physical support. #gccedu Link to article referenced: https://t.co/R5VwrucHns
1/2 As we battle COVID-19 both economically and physically, it is important to remember the toll on education. Some students and their families will be pushed into poverty due to the pandemic, and we cannot ignore that fact. As teachers, we need to be prepared for this and not
3/3 not receive the support they need. Hopefully, these students will either get to stay or receive a quality education elsewhere...but I understand getting attached to where you know (current college). Article referenced: https://t.co/5e4kggG3mo . #gccedu
1/3 Currently, our world looks a lot different than it will look when I start teaching due to the pandemic. However, this hurts my heart. Because of the pandemic, students in the US on visas for schooling may not have their visas renewed if their colleges hold online-only classes
2/3 As a student, I feel awful for students my age potentially missing out on their education here. As a future teacher, this is devastating. Students rely on their professors/teachers, especially in times as unpredictable as these, and if they are forced out of the US, they will
@JLeandroedu I have seen some teachers send encouraging messages to their students (especially to the class of 2020), some recreate TikToks to make them laugh, and even sped teachers are making videos for students to follow along with even though they are not together in person #specialedchat
Hey all!! Today @megan_parkEDU and @specht_edu presented on ADHD really well! 2 things I learned were that there are 3 types of ADHD - inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. I also learned that 9.4% of US teens/kids are diagnosed with it! #gccedu#futureteacherslead
In these unprecedented times, it’s so easy to get discouraged and stay in a constant state of gloom and doom. Don’t lose heart! ❤️ Things will get better! It’ll take time. Here’s advice for everyone, especially K-12 students! #futureteacherslead#gccedu#BetterTogether
@CNicholsEduc@GCC_SB It’s things like these that make me so proud of the community we’ve built at GCC and to be a part of such a cool college!! Love it! #TogetherApart
A little late, but earlier I watched a really cool person present about hearing loss/deafness! Biggest things I learned are hearing aid devices are an individual’s choice, and saying hi to them even if you don’t know ASL is so important! #gccedu#futureteacherslead#TogetherApart
