Beretta Makes History in South Africa: The World’s First Beretta Training Academy Officially Opens

I was privileged to participate in the official opening of the very first Beretta Training Academy in the world last Friday on behalf of GOSA Girls on Fire. Joining me for the day was Paul Oxley from GOSA (Gun Owners South Africa), and it was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and respected role players from across the firearms community.
As Beretta celebrates an extraordinary milestone of over 500 years of firearm manufacturing excellence, the launch event was proudly presented in partnership with Normark Africa, the official importers of Beretta in South Africa, together with CMH Sport Shooters Retreat.
The official launch took place on 15 May at CMH Sport Shooters Retreat in Midvaal, situated just outside Vereeniging and a little over an hour’s drive south of Johannesburg, near the quaint town of Kliprivier. The setting was ideal for what would become a landmark occasion within the South African firearm industry.
This academy is intended to be far more than simply a training facility. In a country such as South Africa — one of the most crime-ridden societies in the world — responsible firearm ownership plays an important role in self-defense, sport shooting, hunting, and personal safety. The hunting fraternity alone contributes significantly to tourism and the country’s GDP, while the broader firearm industry continues to support thousands of jobs and businesses throughout South Africa.
South African firearm owners also remain under constant pressure from government through restrictive firearm legislation and proposed negative amendments to the Firearms Control Act. Because of this, facilities such as the Beretta Training Academy are critically important investments into the long-term sustainability, education, safety, and growth of the firearms industry in South Africa.
The Academy itself was developed through a partnership between Beretta, CMH, and ITA, with the support of Normark Africa. The vision behind the academy is to offer structured training experiences, product familiarisation, skills development, and future-focused educational opportunities designed for both new and experienced firearm owners, dealers, sport shooters, hunters, and the broader shooting community.
The launch day included not only the formal opening of the training facilities, but also an extensive range day where guests had the opportunity to experience a wide variety of firearms supplied by Normark Africa.
Participants were fortunate enough to shoot new Beretta handguns, sporting semi-automatic shotguns, clay pigeon shotguns, pistol calibre carbines, and several Victix manually operated rifles over various distances. Firearms ranged from smaller calibres such as the .22LR to the highly capable 6.5 Creedmoor platforms.
Each shooting stage was managed by experienced Range Officers, ensuring that safety and professionalism remained a top priority throughout the day. As a woman who actively promotes responsible firearm ownership amongst women for self-defense, sport shooting, and hunting, I was especially encouraged to see many female Range Officers involved in the event. Female participation within the firearms industry continues to grow, and it was inspiring to witness women confidently taking leadership roles on the range.
Guests were divided into shooting squads and rotated through the various stages over the course of the day. The atmosphere was energetic and positive, with participants sharing knowledge, experiences, and a genuine passion for the shooting sports. Combined with a beautiful sunny Gauteng winter’s day, it made for an unforgettable experience.
What stood out most was the sense that this academy represents a major step forward for the South African firearms community. Training, education, safety, and responsible ownership remain the foundation upon which the future of the industry must be built. Facilities such as this create opportunities not only for firearm owners, but also for youth development, women entering the industry, sport shooters, hunters, instructors, and future professionals.
The establishment of the first Beretta Training Academy in the world right here in South Africa is both significant and symbolic. It demonstrates confidence in the South African firearms community and highlights the passion, resilience, and professionalism that exist within our industry despite ongoing challenges.
I would like to thank Beretta, Normark Africa, CMH Sport Shooters Retreat, ITA, the Range Officers, organisers, and everyone involved for an outstanding day.
I wish the Academy every success for the future and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the firearm community in South Africa for many years to come.
