To understand why Cerebras built a very, very big chip, it really comes down to one number: the energy it takes to move a bit of data.

Off-chip: ~1–10 pJ/bit
On-chip: ~0.1 pJ/bit

Moving data on-chip can take up to ~100× less energy than moving it off-chip. At AI scale, where you’re constantly moving trillions of bits,
that difference becomes enormous.

Cerebras is not big for size's sake. By keeping compute and memory close together, you get minimal data movement.
