The mission of OpenAI is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity

I am very grateful Aleksander accepted our request to come take this on; the safety and security challenges in front of us as we confront superintelligence are immense, and he has an excellent set of skills to work on this.

Personal update: Turns out that what I thought was leaving OpenAI became more of a sabbatical.

When I left a few months ago, I felt that the most important thing to focus on was making AI more useful to people. But we’ve since entered a different regime of AI progress. One in which getting the safety and security challenges of increasingly capable AI right has to become a central priority.

So I’ll be returning to OpenAI, joining @merettm to help chart a path through these challenges.

There’s much work to do, so let’s get going.

The back of the Navier-Stokes milestone shirt is the last line of the chain-of-thought from the solution:

Wow the new roadster looks quite amazing, good job @elonmusk

Very happy to see this from Nick!

interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had

with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works

Have been waiting for this one for a long time, and I would hate to have to go back to the old version of Chat!

[Sam Altman @sama]

ChatGPT can now generate a custom UI for you!

[OpenAI @OpenAI]

GPT-6 and Intelligent UI, now rolling out in ChatGPT for everyone.

Intelligent UI in ChatGPT delivers fast, interactive answers that make everyday questions more visual, complex topics easier to grasp, and interactive tools for your task available on the spot.

and thank you to the untold number of people who put in the technical work, brick by brick over the generations, to get us to the point where such a wonder is possible.

[Sam Altman @sama]

looking up at the stars with extra awe tonight.

"thy sea is so great and my boat is so small."

[Sam Altman @sama]

thank you to the machines, and the structure of reality, for letting us understand a little more.

We are entering a new era of discovery now:

I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.

[Sam Altman @sama]

The contrast between hanging up the last phone call of the day of high-stakes decisions and then a minute later walking in the door to the pure love of small children who want to laugh and play and show you every discovery they made that day is the strangest and best thing I have ever experienced in life.

There is some speculation about our partnership with Cerebras.

Cerebras is a close partner, and we have a deep engagement pushing on the frontiers of speed.

dot is my favorite openai product so far!

it is amazing to me that each day it feels noticably better as it learns more of my workflow and style.

having it do the stuff i don't like doing--and usually just builds up as a gravity well of dread--has me very happy.

You should be able to use your AI subscription wherever you need:

I am going to try and answer a bunch of questions that people have raised about Sign in with ChatGPT in the next couple of days. Before that, I want to let you all in to why we shipped Sign in with ChatGPT (SIWC) in the first place. Clarify our intentions here before getting to the specifics.

[Sam Altman @sama]

Also, 6.1 Sol was our fastest-growing model ever, and was a bit slow under load. Should be much better now!

[Sam Altman @sama]

I think there is much more potential energy in Sign In With ChatGPT/Plugin Extensions than we realize

[Sam Altman @sama]

DevDay was really fun, the builder energy was crazy

Still wild to me to see people making whole startups in a day

[Andrew Ambrosino @ajambrosino]

Over the past 5 weeks, the team completely rewrote ChatGPT Web on top of the desktop app codebase.

This was only possible with Astra, and it’s why Dots, Space, Codex Cloud, and so many more of our launches will come to web and desktop same day.

Era of the megaproject begins.

[Sam Altman @sama]

Dots are here!

A new way to use AI that works 24/7 for you; get more of your time and attention back to work at a higher level.
