8 years ago today, Drake dropped his fifth commercial mixtape: More Life.
This is probably the only really solid piece of work that Drake has put out since IYRTITL. He was on top form throughout, the production was extremely interesting, and each and every one of the features actually served a proper purpose. The range on here is really impressive, taking inspiration from all sorts of different cultures to create a playlist of songs that manages to feel extremely fresh but familiar at the same time. It really is a fun album to listen to, making it a great choice to chuck on when you’re looking for them summer vibes.

9 years ago today, Kendrick Lamar released his compilation album: Untitled Unmastered.
This record continues with the mood set by the two insane projects that came before it, giving us plenty more of those eerie and abstract sounds that made them so special. Kendrick carries on many of the conversations that were had during these two eras, yet somehow manages to condense so much more for us to chew on in just 8 tracks. The production is very reminiscent of both projects, with a beautiful balance between the dark and twisted tracks and those much lighter, upbeat jazzy tunes. There aren’t many artists that can give you a collection of throwaways and make it this good, but you could always rely on Kendrick to be one of them.
Where would you place this one in his discography?
(I got it above DAMN & Section.80)
36 years ago today, De La Soul released their debut studio album: 3 Feet High and Rising.
This record is as classic as they come, revolutionising the sound of hip-hip in a way that feels just as fresh today as it did almost four decades ago. It’s full of so many bops and big hits that have captured the hearts of many from every generation that’s followed from it’s released. The influence and impact of this project are undeniable, and the way it’s managed to stand the test of time is a clear testiment to this. For me personally though, I don’t find it to be the most interesting album to listen to from front to back, it’s just be a little bit too inoffensive all round for my liking. Regardless, the vibes on this one are so nice, and becuase of this you can spin it anytime, anywhere, to any audience, and you’re guaranteed a positive reception.

11 years ago today, Schoolboy Q released his third studio album: Oxymoron
This is easily one of the most gangsta records I’ve listened to from this new era of hip-hop, and the art work for this one does a great job at re-inforcing that feeling too. The production across the whole thing is raw, grimey and just straight up hard, with so many dirty samples and eerie instrumentals that all add to the overall album experience. Qs story telling and subject matter fit this vibe perfectly, and although there isn’t that much substance behind a lot of what he’s saying, his sharp and exagerrated delivery more than makes up for this. His unique flow just gives off this sense of menace that is so satisfying to listen to. Overall this is a really solid project and is home to some of my favourite songs of his, however, there just aren’t that many stand out moments in the rest of the tracks that makes this hard for me to rate it any higher.

6 years ago today, Gunna released his debut studio album: Drip or Drown 2
After the success of Drip Season 3, Gunna was able to hone in on what he does best and give us a much more focused project that embodies the leisurely life of a laid back rap-star. His vocal inflections and melodies are as hypnotic as ever, emitting this effortless sense of confidence that is both hard-hitting and comforting all at the same time. The whole record makes for some very easy listening in fact, as the production consists of those much more chilled out beats pretty much all the way through. Even so, at 16 songs long with the absence of any real big hits, there is no point where this album feels bloated. Wheezy and Turbo honestly did such a great job on here, utilising such a nice range of sounds and samples that fit the overall vibe of the project perfectly. It might be a rather safe listen, but Drip or Drown 2 does everything it’s supposed to exceptionally well and because of that, I find myself revisiting it frequently.
