At the village, deep in the Zambezi valley on one of the funerals of the Lake Kariba ferry disaster in solidarity with the community, I sat with Tonga women of Kariba rural Nyaminyami. They asked me questions that cut deep. Does the government even know we exist? Are they coming to mourn with us also? Do they know our troubles? Do they know that we dont have roads? Do they know we dont have electricity even though its generated in our backyard? Do they see how we are marginalized? In this tragedy, their grief is raw, yet they remain invisible. They said to me we hear that government ministers are gathered in urban Kariba with tents and ceremonies, here in rural Kariba where a lot of victims are coming to be buried home no one came. No resources, no recognition, no solidarity. Their voices cut through the silence: “Do they know us? Do they know our pain?” This is why I chose to be here. Because dignity must be defended where it is most denied
