Fedorov’s YouTube intervention appears to have backfired considerably.

Ukrainians were protesting because they wanted Fedorov as Defence Minister, not because they wanted him to create a political power struggle or call for wartime elections.

Instead, he attacked a government he’s been part of for years, the protests effectively disappeared, and support consolidated behind Khmara.

He may have badly mistaken support for Fedorov the Defence Minister for support for Fedorov the political challenger.

They are not the same thing,

By mistaking enthusiasm for his reforms as approval for a political fight, Mykhailo Fedorov just blew a massive opportunity.

What should he have done instead to serve his country while securing his long-term career?

Fedorov spent seven years building genuine credibility, especially through his groundbreaking work as minister of digital transformation. Yet calling for national elections only after losing the defense ministry reveals a total lapse in judgment. He never pushed for elections while in cabinet, which makes his sudden stance look like personal ambition disguised as principle.

If he truly cared about Ukraine more than his career, he would have swallowed his pride and accepted another critical assignment, such as CEO of Ukroboronprom or another ministerial seat. Taking a lower-profile role to keep helping the war effort would have proven his motives were pure, earning him immense respect and setting him up perfectly for a future presidential run.

Instead, he chose to overreach and challenge wartime unity. By framing himself as a political adversary to Zelensky during an invasion, he sidelined himself, leaving both Ukraine and his own career worse off
