@wea71000 @the_transit_guy It’s possible but most steel used in the US in the 1960s was domestic. The fact that there is existing fireproofing on the columns indicates that no one fully verified the existing structure. Or there was fireproofing covering existing damage.

@AllDayNYC Union or non-Union this is on whoever the structural engineer is, whichever steel sub did the delegated design shop drawings, and the 3rd party inspections. Non-Union iron workers have nothing to do with the failure of existing columns under load. This guy only knows piping.

@KevinElkinsNY The steel that is buckled was probably put up by Union Iron workers. The shitty sub that did the delegated design drawings probably made a poor assumption about the existing steel. Then stacked a shitload of weight on it.

@NBCPhiladelphia Ask for the 3rd party inspections. I highly doubt city inspections have anything to do with this. It’s most likely an issue with the install process or a material failure on the precast.

@MCCCANM I mean I think they could have gotten the nose over a bit in the few seconds of reaction time, but not enough to prevent a major collision. Plus it’s LGA and if you swerve to avoid the truck you’re probably going to hit someone else.
