I’m often asked, “Why don’t they go to school?” or “Why don’t parents just get identity documents for their children?
These questions reveal a gap in understanding. For many children, the barrier to education isn’t a lack of willingness—it’s systemic exclusion.
As we approach the International Day of Education, we’re reminded that education should never depend on documentation. Every child deserves the right to learn—inside classrooms, not outside school gates.

Seas have no borders. Prisons do.
Hundreds of Pakistani and Indian fisherfolk, often from impoverished coastal communities, are arrested for unwittingly crossing maritime borders in the Arabian Sea every year. Detained for years on end without trial, cut off from their families, and trapped in the political crosshairs of two hostile neighbours, their predicament remains a tragic but overlooked humanitarian crisis.
Researched by @taherahasan, our latest policy paper, Caught in the Net: A regional policy framework for incarcerated fisherfolk in India and Pakistan, explores the issue’s legal, diplomatic and socioeconomic dimensions, highlighting the urgency for a humane and lasting solution. With exclusive insights into current detention statistics, the disputed Sir Creek region and broader geopolitical stakes, this report urges cooperative and consistent mechanisms and a regional solution to protect lives and livelihoods along the shared coastline.
