I never imagined I would see this day: Major General (dismissed from service) Ziaul Ahsan, once a powerful and feared commander of Bangladesh's Rapid Action Battalion—an organization sanctioned by the @USTreasury for its involvement in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings—has been arrested and brought to court. Known as "the beast in uniform" by his colleagues, as revealed in a recently leaked secret document, Ahsan later led the national telecommunications monitoring cell, enhancing its surveillance capabilities with advanced technology from around the world, including Israel.

Despite his arrest, he stands with a grim smile, showing no remorse.

A country where hatred is nurtured can never prosper. The very rights for which so many sacrificed their lives are now being usurped. Bangladesh is not a land of a single group or ideology; it is a country of 170 million people, each with the right to express their opinion — freely. For instance, yesterday many danced in front of the burnt-down house of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and no one stopped them! They danced and celebrated with joy. This is the beauty of democracy and living in a free nation. 

So why were those who went to pay their respects at Sheikh Mujib's house today attacked? Don’t they have the right to pay homage to their ideological guru? Many had their phones snatched and journalists were not spared too. Doesn’t this behaviour remind you of the oppressive regime that hundreds gave their life to get rid of? Doesn’t this behaviour remind you of the Chhatra League that we speak of with much disgust? 

We speak of Bangladesh 2.0, but if historical figures like Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Tajuddin Ahmad, and Ziaur Rahman are not given their due respect, this new Bangladesh will come caving down like a house of cards. One cannot deny that Bangladesh was built on the work of these men. And followers of these men must be guaranteed the freedom to pay homage to them and engage in politics without obstruction. Bangladesh 2.0 is for all — including the Awami League that hundreds sacrificed their lives to get rid of. No section of society should be disenfranchised in Bangladesh 2.0.

As long as we do not emerge out of this culture of pettiness, hatred, intolerance, bitterness, vengeance and animosity, we cannot really build a new Bangladesh, one that is a model to the world. Otherwise, it will be rinse and repeat of the repression of the past 15 years.
