"The rarest salmon in the world"
In the cold & clear water of streams that cut through Taiwan's remote mountains live the endangered Formosan landlocked salmon (Ochyrynchus masou formosanus).
This species is not only the rarest, but also the most southerly salmonid in the world
The land crabs are back at it!
In Taiwan during full moons of July through October land crans migrate from their forest homes to the ocean to spawn.
Tonight in Houwan in southern Taiwan we were greeted by MANY land crabs. Enjoy!
A wonderful recognition for a series that explores the botany of Taiwan and it's inextricable link to its marvelous and diverse cultures.

Just a leaf?
Gnetum is a genus within the gymnosperms (pine, spruce,...) with flat leaves & reticulate venation. This leaf structure is very similar to that of flowering plants but evolved independently - convergent evolution!
Not just a leaf, but an evolutionary story!
