If you are working in civic tech, public policy, government, etc, add yourself to Connect so others in the ecosystem can find you.
We are also hosting a hackathon on June 24 for anyone who wants to build tools that help government deliver. Register here: https://t.co/FS4q4tYx5y
- an Affinity network graph that surfaces surprising connections between them
- a Connect layer where practitioners can find each other by the specific problems they are working on
On the streets side, the board passed a resolution supporting a protected bike lane on St. Mark's between 3rd Ave and Avenue A, and DOT shared that the Canal Street redesign timeline has slipped, with no vote now expected in June.
Notes from last nightโs MCB3 full board meeting are up!
The most heated debate was over Kimlau Square. The board voted to support relocating the memorial arch as part of the square's redesign, following debate over whether the community had been adequately engaged.
I built a tracker of every fiscal impact statement filed with the Councilโs legislation since 2014, and the picture that emerges is striking: over $7.5 billion in net costs added to city agency budgets, with 97% of local laws specifying no dedicated funding source.
The NYC Council passes a lot of legislation. What it rarely does is specify the funding for any of it.
The gap between what the Council mandates and how it gets paid for goes a long way toward explaining why the city struggles to deliver on its own laws.
Iโm also planning some upcoming events for those building or interested in learning how to build in civic tech with AI โ look out for announcements soon!
I walk through how I now use Claude Code to build interactive charts on things like NYC's curb space allocation, the FY25 budget, and tax distributions.
I also describe how the same workflow enabled Block Party to build a searchable database of NYC Community Board resolutions.
I covered last night's Manhattan CB3 Full Board meeting.
The Board approved a 21-story development, supported a 5-day Canal Street Open Streets expansion, and got an update on the Mayor's new Office of Mass Engagement stepping in to mediate the E 11th St delivery biker situation.
