Kyiv is recorded as a capital from the late 9th–10th centuries: the Primary Chronicle places Oleh’s transfer of the seat to Kyiv under the year 882. Moscow first appears in a chronicle on 4 April 1147, when Yuri Dolgoruky invites Sviatoslav Olhovych “to Moskov.”

Kharkiv began as a Cossack fortress. In 1654 settlers from the Right Bank founded an ostroh there; the town later became the centre of the Kharkiv Cossack regiment.

Lviv’s first written mention is in the Galician–Volhynian Chronicle, in the account of a fire at Kholm in autumn 1256. Under Lev Danylovych in the 1270s Lviv replaced Halych as the capital of Rus (Kyiv was destroyed by Gold Horde).

In 1253 knyaz Danylo Romanovych was crowned by the papal legate Opizo. He received the title King of Rus. Pope Innocent IV recognized the coronation. After the Mongol sack of Kyiv in 1240, the Galicia-Volhynia principality was the largest remaining Rus’ realm in the west.
