I believe we'll never fully know whether AIs feel pain.

It's part of the hard problem of consciousness/valence.

But, we WILL eventually assume it has; and behave as if it has.

Here's why:

Because if you map the possibilities:

📛If AIs feel pain and we dismiss it, we may create UNIMAGINABLE amounts of suffering.

⚙️If AIs do not feel pain and we mistakenly treat them ethically anyway, the downside is mostly inefficiency, or misplaced moral caution.

I believe the biggest breakthrough will be the realization that consciousness isn't something brains “produce,” but something far more fundamental to reality itself.

We'll laugh about how we believed that subjective experience was just some side-effect of neurons firing.

In the same way we look back and laugh at how confidently humans believed in things like flat Earth, Witchcraft,

I think people 100 years from now the #1 BIGGEST paradigm shift will be about consciousness.

“binding problem” in consciousness research is fascinating:

how separate computations ~ color, sound, body position, memory, emotion, language, become experienced as ONE moment by one subject.
