Greetings, David Lammy!
I had hoped you & I could stop this merry morning routine. But here we all are. Staring into the abyss once more.
Could we, please, open the 21% of courtrooms closed today instead of restricting jury trial?
The horrors persist, but so do I,
Joanna
Today is Firefighters Memorial Day.
It is a day to pay tribute to, and remember, all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their communities.
Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.
The online system the Crown Courts use to run criminal cases is glitching. Some case documents randomly disappear. Some widely-shared messages from lawyers & judges revert to earlier versions. Notifications already dealt with reappear.
Backlog: 80,000 cases.
And counting. 🎪

But it is. Every word.
@DavidLammy and @sarahsackman want to remove the right to jury trial in cases involving *death*.
Homicide cases.
Hello, there 👋
Have you heard David Lammy MP and Sarah Sackman MP talking about people stealing bottles of whisky and swiping mobile telephones as examples of people who should not get jury trials?
Well. I’d like to tell you a story.
🪡 🧵
On and on it goes. The ABH guideline. The Sexual Assault guideline. The Fraud guideline. The Affray guideline. Thousands & thousands of cases falling in a range where people will have no choice but to have the worst moments of their lives tried summarily - or by judge alone.
this is the biggest constitutional change in the criminal justice system in generations . Juries are “the lamp through which liberty shines” - and it vandalised without it being in a manifesto - and this is your response ?
Thousands of lawyers oppose jury restriction plan - BBC News
More than 3,200 lawyers including 300 top barristers and retired judges have called on the government to drop a plan to abolish some jury trials.

Oh btw, the introduction of “independent legal advisors” for rape complainants is going to be a potential minefield. Have a read of this article from @lawsocgazette to see why.
“ A third sector organisation will be commissioned to run the service through a government grant”
🚨 WATCH: Labour MP Charlotte Nichols reveals she was raped as an MP as she opposes the jury trial reforms
"I waited 1,088 days to go to court. We've been told [by the Government] that if we have concerns about this Bill, it's because we've not been raped"
If the jury reforms go through, what is to happen when the prison population explodes?
Even with the changes in the Sentencing Act 2026, that is absolutely bound to happen.
It is so depressingly predictable.
But these new measures won't allow us roll back to where we are now.
To say I’m disappointed in Govt efforts to erode a cornerstone of our society is an understatement. This is disgraceful, the public should be afraid-this move would encompass even some sex offences & S20 GBH’s #JusticeNeedsJuries#JuryTrials#CJS
🚨 NEW: MPs have voted to progress the jury trial reforms
Yes: 304
No: 203
Labour MP Karl Turner is said to be confident that the reforms in the Bill will be scrapped at committee stage
They use an example of stealing a bottle of whisky deliberately, you see. Because it sounds lightweight & silly. But either way offences with sentences less than 3 years will include some sexual assaults, some ABHs, some s20 GBHs & some frauds.
It’s not about whisky.
Or knees.
