🚨BREAKING & INTEL BREIFING:AL-SHABAAB FIGHTERS IN YEMEN REPORTEDLY TRAINING WITH RUSSIAN & CHINESE MERCENARY SPECIALISTS

According to military-intelligence sources in Mogadishu and affiliates in Yemen, 250 of Al-Shabaab fighters in Houthi-controlled Yemen are receiving accelerated training from Russian and Chinese-speaking mercenary specialists, focused on advanced drones and medium-range strike systems.

UN reporting confirms Al-Shabaab sought advanced weapons and training from the Houthis and was spending roughly a quarter of its operational budget acquiring weapons from the Houthis and AQAP, alongside fighter training.

I also reported in November 2024 that Al-Shabaab had obtained Iranian 358/Saqr missilesthrough the Houthi network. The Century Foundation has since documented Al-Shabaab’s interest in that same Iranian-designed system, while noting uncertainty over how fully the capability has been absorbed.

The Afghanistan angle is also important. I previously reported Al-Shabaab interest in Afghan-based training networks, and theAugust 2026 UN Monitoring Team report records several Al-Shabaab fighters travelling from Somalia to Afghanistan. Combined with its links to AQAP in Yemen, this points to Al-Shabaab seeking specialist expertise across multiple jihadist theatres.

Intel Judgment: Al-Shabaab is trying to close its advanced-weapons skills gap quickly, with the likely goal of independently threatening shipping in the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean** without direct Houthi support.
