Just published and available for FREE as an Open Access article on Dead Sea Discoveries.
Co-authored with my brilliant colleagues, Drs. T. Emmerich Kamper, I. Cohen-Ofri, and N. Sukenik.
As you might have noticed, the stitching thread in the photo here is linen, not sinew. In fact, none of the stitching threads we analysed in the lab were made of sinew (as per rabbinic law as “halakhah leMoshe miSinai”). We discuss this, along with other details such as thread construction, stitching techniques, and seam placement.

A collection of dozens of ancient coins was seized after a suspected smuggling attempt from the West Bank into Israel last month, the Israel Antiquities Authority said Monday.
Most of the coins date back approximately 2,000 years. Some were minted by Hasmonean kings (in the second or first centuries BCE), others by Jewish rebels during the Great Jewish Revolt (66-73 CE) or the Bar Kochba Revolt (132-136 CE). The collection also includes many Roman coins.
Amir Ganor, the director of the IAA’s theft prevention unit, says that looters use sophisticated metal detectors to find ancient coins and take them from antiquities sites — and from their historical context.

A 1,400-year-old church featuring colorful mosaic floors has been discovered at Nitzana National Park in the Negev, Ben-Gurion University announced on Monday.
The remains mark the sixth church found at the site, which is also spelled “Nessana” and is located next to the border with Egypt.
In Byzantine times, the settlement served as an essential stopping place for pilgrims traveling from the Holy Land to Saint Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai, Prof. Yana Tchekhanovets of the BGU Department of Archaeology told The Times of Israel over the phone.

It might be much less glam than the Colosseum or the Forum, but this is an extraordinary #Roman site - created because it was cheaper to make new amphorae where needed than ship empty vessels back to reuse...
