The architect of mass action, Walter Sisulu was born on this day in 1912. Never kept a job because every time he found work, he mobilised workers to strike. He is credited for influencing the ANC's shift to a mass movement from the late 1940s onward.

Did you know? In 1938, Oliver Tambo and Joseph Mokoena broke academic barriers for Black students, with their high scores in Mathematics and Physical Science in the Transvaal being matched by only one White student that year. This prompted the government to probe their marks and ordered them to rewrite both subjects. Even after rewriting, both Tambo & Mokoena still topped the matric class of the year. “The whole of Africa lost something when he died. #OliverTambo was in a class of his own. We have lost a truly great man."
- President Kenneth Kaunda
Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the passing of #ORTambo, who, after dedicating his life to the struggle for South Africa's liberation, passed away one year before the first democratic elections.

“Let all of us who live say that while we live Oliver Tambo will not die. May he, for his part, rest in peace. Go well, my brother and farewell, dear friend.”
- President Nelson Mandela (1993)
On this, the 33rd anniversary of his passing, we remember the incredible legacy of #OliverTambo.
#OnThisDay 66 years ago, apartheid police used live ammunition on peaceful, PAC protesters in #Sharpeville and #Langa, 69 people in Sharpeville and 2 people in Langa, and injuring over 200 people combined.
On this Human Rights Day, we remember the Sharpeville Massacre — a turning point that illuminated the brutal cost of oppression and the urgent demand for freedom, dignity, and justice for all.
#OliverTambo spoke of active action in the face of injustice, and the reality of that moment showed how state violence aimed to quell the cry for rights. The passage of time does not soften the pain, but it strengthens our resolve to safeguard human rights, advance equality, and honor those who stood up for justice.
Today, we recommit to building a future where the tragedies of the past propel us toward ensuring enduring human rights for all.
“No struggle depends on one person — but there are exceptions to every rule. Comrade O.R. is that exception.” — Nelson Mandela on his close friend #ORTambo, 1991.
Honouring Oliver Reginald Tambo, 108 years on.

ORTARChI is a pioneering collaborative research funding initiative, spearheaded by the NRF, in partnership with @dstigovza, the @TamboFoundation, and Canada’s @IDRC_CRDI
We are thrilled to be at Makerere University for the 3rd annual gathering of O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative.
This initiative truly embodies the spirit of O.R. -- his passion for education, African knowledge. sovereignty, and cooperation across African nations.
As the Foundation's CEO, Natasha Allie said in her opening remarks, "We are united by a conviction that the legacy of O.R. Tambo is not a monument to be admired, but a movement to be advanced. It lives wherever African scholars push the boundaries of knowledge, and wherever research is used to uplift communities and strengthen our shared humanity."

“O.R. deserves to be remembered. He is the father of the struggle, the father of democracy in this country...
He didn't want it. But I think we owe it to his legacy to at least honour him more than we are doing so that future generations do not forget O.R., and so that it never happens again, that, post-revolution, history consumes its heroes.”
— Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
Humble. Principled. Unyielding.
This #TamboMonth2025, we honour the man who held a movement together — and inspired a continent.

“We believe that sanctions against South Africa — economic, diplomatic, even cultural — are absolutely essential. And we bring this matter as one of urgency.”
— Oliver Tambo
Long before hashtags, #Tambo mobilised the world’s conscience against apartheid.
His call for #PanAfricanUnity and #GlobalSolidarity still echoes today.

#DidYouKnow Oliver Tambo was close friends with African leaders, especially Julius Nyerere in Tanzania, Kenneth Kaunda in Zambia, Sam Nujoma in Namibia, and Samora Machel in Mozambique.
Africa was the first and most important source of support for the South African liberation movement, and these frontline states risked their safety and security by being allies of the liberation movement.
