“So, in the next few days we will have a state budget that falls short in many ways. The General Assembly, armed with a multibillion dollar surplus, had the ability to make a positive impact across our state, but whiffed. Unfortunately, this budget continues the systematic dismantling of public education in NC. Just a few highlights below of the dismantling over the last decade.

Our front line state workers and teachers were once again short changed in the budget. No wonder why teachers and other school workers are fleeing the profession in droves. As a state we rank 34th in the nation for average teacher pay and 46th for beginning teacher pay. While this budget makes a modest improvement for beginning teacher pay (maybe we will get out of the 40’s) but the most experienced teachers will see a whopping $110 a month increase. Who is going to be here to support and train the next generation of educators? In 15 years will we even have career educators any more?

It is pitiful to hear stories every day about teachers quitting something they love because they can’t afford to pay their rent. I heard 2 stories like this just today. No wonder why there has been a 30% decrease in Ed program enrollment in NC over the last decade and a more than 50% decrease in UNC system Ed program enrollment.

PS…This is not a local issue. Our Board of Education has done a wonderful job with supporting the staff here in CCS and are doing everything they can to supplement salaries where the state has fallen short. However, they are limited in what they can do because the majority of our funding comes from the state.

PSS…If you’re not an educator and want to see what they do daily come substitute for a day. I’ll even pay you $113 for your time. “
