Justice Above Politics — The Hon’ble Supreme Court Was Right on Karur
The Supreme Court’s decision to transfer the Karur stampede investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation is neither overreach nor interference. It is an assertion of judicial responsibility at a time when public confidence has been shaken by political crossfire and media sensationalism.
Forty-one lives were lost at a rally organised by actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). What should have been a tragedy demanding collective accountability quickly turned into a political spectacle. Competing narratives, defensive statements, and media theatrics blurred the truth. In this environment, the hon’ble Supreme Court’s intervention ensured that the search for justice would not be influenced by either political convenience or public noise.
Legal Prudence, Not Activism
Critics argue that the hon’ble Supreme Court violated its own precedents by ordering a CBI probe. That reading ignores the essence of State of West Bengal vs. CPDR (2010), which discourages routine transfers but allows them when fairness is reasonably in doubt. In Karur, premature official briefings and conflicting accounts had already cast shadows on impartiality. An independent probe, under judicial supervision, became necessary to restore trust in due process.
Protecting Faith, Not Undermining Federalism
Law and order may be a State subject, but justice is a national commitment. Federalism cannot mean immunity from scrutiny. When an incident acquires political overtones and public institutions appear divided, an impartial central investigation becomes a safeguard, not a slight. The Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order also placed the CBI under a supervisory committee, ensuring transparency and limiting arbitrary action.
A Shield Against Manufactured Perception
Ironically, those who accuse the Court of yielding to “manufactured perception” overlook how politicised media coverage itself justified judicial intervention. In an age of paid journalism and orchestrated outrage, facts are too easily replaced by spin. The Hon’ble Supreme Court’s decision protects the process of justice from both political influence and media manipulation. It re-centres the conversation on evidence rather than on emotion.
Restoring Institutional Balance
The Hon’ble Supreme Court’s move does not question the competence of the entire Tamil Nadu police; it simply recognises the importance of perceived neutrality in matters of grave public concern. Judicial oversight of the CBI probe balances independence with accountability, ensuring that no authority investigates itself.
Justice, Seen and Felt
Ultimately, the The Hon’ble Supreme Court acted on the oldest principle of democratic faith — justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. When grief turns into partisan debate, the judiciary’s moral duty is to step in, not stand aside.
The Karur order is not a challenge to democracy; it is its reaffirmation. By choosing an independent path amid political noise and corporate media distortion, the Supreme Court upheld the one value that sustains public trust — that truth must stand above power, and justice above politics.
