It's baaaack. We are on day 2 of posting forecasted #FraserRiver water levels on our interactive map. Flows and levels heading up; 5.8 m at Mission, so not in true danger territory.

A new webinar!? You betcha! Join us on April 26th for an @NRCan webinar on "Fragility to Flexibility: the imperative for adaptive flood management approaches in Canada" with Tamsin Lyle. Learn more at: https://t.co/FkT5c9Ud79
Great episode of #thedaily with @cflav . There are so many parallels, albeit at a larger scale, between the obstacles to better approaches to #flood and #drought in California and BC’s Fraser Valley. Listen!! #bcflood#drr https://t.co/nnzynuVSci
Now streaming! Settle in for a wild ride with a side of #flood science and policy.
Watch out for glimpses of Ebbwater principal @TamsinLyle and amazing collaborators @STCTye and @CarieAnnLau.

There's an important story about #flood#risk and the choices we've made in the past in this documentary airing tonight.
Also a good opportunity to giggle as the ideas of normally sedate science professionals (@CarieAnnLau@simondonner and myself) get seriously dramatized 😉
Tune in TONIGHT, December 15th for part one of After the Storm, a 2-part limited series from the producers of Highway Thru Hell, 10pmET/7pm PT on @DiscoveryCanada #BCStorm#BCFloods@GreatPacificTV@tbirdent
I think this may be the most « entertaining » media I’ve been interviewed for in the last year. Definitely curious to see how it comes together! #bcflood#bcpoli#drr (wrapped in high intensity sights and sounds).
“I think it’ll become very quickly obvious, a penny spent now is going to be worth billions down the road (in savings),” said Tamsin Lyle, who heads @Ebbwater
Exciting and hopeful times. Here’s hoping this new ministry and new minister (@BowinnMa) can create accountability and leadership on this super important, yet complex, file. #DRR#BCFloods#SendaiPriority3
On a personal note, super excited to have a fellow female engineer on this very important file. I may be biased 😉, but the field of #disasterrisk benefits greatly from the mix of science and empathy that strong, smart women bring to it. @BowinnMa
Almost fell off our chairs in the office. Something we've been advocating for for years has happened. BC has a NEW MINISTER FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND CLIMATE READINESS!! Here's hoping this brings accountability and transformational policy shifts! @BowinnMa#bcpoli#DRR
The total cost of last year's #climate disasters in BC is still being counted, but probably safe to say it is in the $10Bn range. Although Federal adaptation funding is welcomed - it pales in comparison to future liabilities. We can do better. #bcfloods
Ecological damage, especially to water quality has huge implications for our fishey, furey, and scaley cousins. It also impacts humans. Holistic metrics, rather than just $ costs, must be used to evaluate #flood mitigation plans for #sumaslake. #bcfloods

We have definitely made some foolish decisions when it comes to #flood and #disaster. What we need to do now is own these mistakes and course correct. Repeating these mistakes will create repeat disasters (and cause me to use stronger language than "stupid"). #bcfloods#bcpoli
More dikes & dams could be a multi-billion dollar mistake: here’s how B.C. could ‘build back better’: https://t.co/jkXAHJzotX @egies story relevant from Pakistan to Missouri. @TamsinLyle: “It’s not just climate change causing these disasters,” but also “stupid human decisions.”
In the event of disasters like #BCFloods, status quo recovery often aims to restore the pre-disaster state. But rather than spending more $ trying to out-engineer nature until the next disaster, experts are saying that there's a better way. @CoastSalishEPS https://t.co/UIkC9Pynq0
We are huge advocates for risk reduction...which is freaking hard. Avoidance of an increase of risk is much easier. Increasing risk through land use change, as is threatened in Ontario, is plain foolish. #ONFlood#bcfloods#bcpoli#onpoli#DRR
Policies to build back to previous standards ignore the fragility of that system, said @TamsinLyle, despite having just seen it fail. “They’re not taking a risk lens to it. They just assume that engineers can get this right,” said Lyle, who is an engineer.
The 10 Golden Rules have been my go to since they were published. These golden rules are also just plain common sense. My quote below, highlights a progression in frustration, that common sense is being trumped by doing what we know. #bcfloods#bcpoli#DRR
“It’s not just climate change causing these disasters,” said @TamsinLyle, but also “stupid human decisions [such as draining a lake]. We’re on the cusp of that recognition in Canada: that big engineering has failed us.” She pointed to the Golden Rules of Floodplain Management:
🧵 A year after BC's catastrophic flood in a former lake, First Nations say #Canada and BC must do more to honor UN pledges to incorporate #Indigenous world views. BC's flood management strategy "needs a hard reset," said @STCTye My story in @thenarwhalca https://t.co/ysIRXceyr3
