It was a stressful moment when this Ruffed Grouse decided to escort her new brood across a paved road. I ended up stopping traffic in both directions until the whole family made it safely to the other side. #birds#nature#wildlife#family
Some birds take hours to find, but not the Wood Stork. They completely tower over the other wetland birds, and that distinct, exotic profile makes them impossible to miss when they're out in the open. #birds#nature#wildlife
Sitting pretty.
Unusually, I'm working 5 days this week. I'm getting too old for this nonsense.
So, here's a pic from my archives. A nankeen kestrel at Goolwa from 2024.
His persistent call gives away a male Yellow-throated Vireo, making him much easier to track down. Note his bulging throat as he sang from the branches. One of my favorite vireos. #birds#birding#birdphotography
I spotted this vagrant American Flamingo on the Texas coast, a new bird for me. It spent much of its time foraging with its head underwater, so it took a little patience to catch a moment when it looked up, and the light was right. #birds#nature#wildlife
Hearing a Wood Thrush is easy if you know its beautiful, flute-like song. Catching a clear glimpse is another matter, as they prefer to stay hidden deep in quiet forests. I was fortunate to catch this one with a red berry. #birds#birdphotography#nature
Another black swan from yesterday afternoon.
It was so nice to see some sunshine. It seems it has been raining for weeks. Not many birds at the wetlands, but the swans are always there.
The Black-throated Green Warbler is easily one of my favorites. This guy was busy gleaning insects from the undersides of leaves and gave me just enough time to get a shot before taking off. #birds#nature#wildlife
Look at those teeny tiny feets! 😄
Those little tootsies are totally out of proportion to the chonky bird.
A laughing kookaburra beside the River Murray at Morgan.
