In trying to make sense of Candace Owens's trip to Russia to speak at SPIEF, I came across and large-scale FBI investigation in 2024 that exposed a massive propaganda operation being perpetuated by the Russian Federation in America. I was SHOCKED I had never heard about it until now. What the FBI discovered back then is without a doubt still occurring. On September 4, 2024, the DOJ unsealed documents exposing a massive Russian Government-Sponsored Influence Operation to covertly spread propaganda to reduce international support for Ukraine, promote pro-Russia sentiments and interests, and to incite internal conflict in the U.S. and foreign nations.
The FBI investigation led to indictments against RT (formerly, "Russia Today"), the news outlet owned and operated by the Russian Federation; the ongoing seizure of over 60 doppelganger internet domains owned by Russian officials impersonating legitimate American news organizations like Fox and TPUSA; and, the explicit exploitation of X's freedom from censorship as the Kremlin's main platform for mass dissemination of propaganda.
Russia’s Foreign Malign Influence Strategy- “empire of covert projects”
1. The Good Old U.S.A Project - goal was to influence U.S. public opinion to align with the viewpoint “that the US should target their effort towards addressing its domestic issues instead of wasting money in Ukraine and other ‘problem’ regions.”
2. The “Guerrilla Media Campaign in the United States” - focused on exploiting the perceived polarization of U.S. society by focusing on eight “Campaign Topics" using social media to disseminate its propaganda through posts, “comments on social networks and local group chats”, memes, and “video content..."
3. “U.S. Social Media Influencers Network” Project - aimed at avoiding detection and mitigation by U.S. social media companies by creating and developing “a network of 200 accounts in Twitter, four in each of the 50 states: two active and two ‘dormant’ ones.
*X (Twitter) - Main Platform for Russia Propaganda Dissemination
"The US Internet space is subject to control by various services and oversight agencies. META, a social media giant (Facebook/Instagram), actively collaborates with the National Security Agency. "X does not engage in "democratic censorship and is the only mass platform that could currently be utilized in the US." In order to eliminate the possibility of detection of the "Russian footprint" in the proposed project, a multi-level protection of the infrastructure will be built. It will contain VPN services, physical servers located in the United States, etc."
4. Targeting the U.S. by Influencing Other Countries - campaigns targeting foreign countries, including Mexico and Israel, with the intent that those efforts would influence associated ethnic or religious groups residing in the United States.
* Mexico - encourage “anti-American sentiment” as well as to exacerbate confrontation between the United States and Mexico. Emphasis on Mexico having historical claims to U.S. territory.
* Israel (and American Jews) - aimed at "target[ing] Jewish communities across the globe, first and foremost in Israel and the US.” One strategy to influence opposition to Ukraine - label them as Nazis.
RT Indictment- FARA violations, money laundering charges and "right-wing" Chinese/Canadian influencer, Lauren Chen
As alleged in the indictment, “After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, RT was sanctioned, dropped by distributors, and ultimately forced to cease formal operations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. In response, " One of RT's "covert projects," as described herein, is its funding and direction of a Tennessee-based online content creation company ("U.S. Company-I"). The U.S. company: Tenet Media, founded by Canadian-born/Chinese raised, Lauren Chen and her husband Liam Donovan. Chen, a friend of Candace Owens @RealCandaceO, was paid by RT fake personas wiring the funds from foreign countries including Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Chen would then recruit influencers who were paid up to $400k/month to spread RT propaganda. None of the parties registered under FARA. Chen was not charged but was sent back to Canada—her and her husband’s work visas were revoked. For unknown reasons, Chen and her family were able to return to the U.S. in December 2025.
