Good morning. Just sharing some musings...

I've been in this hobby since 1980.
I've played and ran more games than I can easily remember. Not just because I'm senile, either. ;-)
I've seen the hobby grow and change. A LOT.

In the 80s there was a boom of new games hot on D&D's success - mostly fantasy, superhero, or sci-fi related with a few fringe. We loved the idea of a game where we could pretend to be epic heroes.

In the 90s the wild, weird, and dark games emerged. We embraced the darkness and had a lot of fun pretending to be vampires, werewolves, aliens, mechs, and more.

Both were fun exciting times for the hobby and all sorts of new gamers joined us old nerds. All were welcome.

In the early 2000s Indie games resurfaced and a lot of movie related games popped up. Most of us embraced the nostalgia.

For 30 years I saw people joining #ttrpgs for mostly three reasons - Curiosity, Genre Fans, Friendship.

And it was good.

This last decade has changed. There is a strange negative mindshift impacting everything that was once just fun. You know - what a game is supposed to be. Fun.

Strangers spewing hate over personal ideologies theyve infused into their vision of the hobby based on pretending. People injecting themselves into the games rather than enjoying the imagination of role playing something completely unlike them.

Strangers attacking each other over their perception of a rule set or mechanic. People who played and enjoyed the same games hurling hate for something that really amounts to nothing.

Strangers going out of their way to attack the OG creators of the hobby with hate and lies. Strangers launching hate campaigns to cancel another persons creativity just because a word or two were used in some manner someone found offensive.

It is easier to destroy than to create.

Everyone just needs to get back to the love of the game. All the rest, the negativity, the attacks, just detract from the hobby as a whole. It does no good at all and serves less than no purpose.

I was a loner when I first played D&D. New kid in a new town with no friends and no family. I spent my time reading books and comics and sketching.

I was in art class and saw D&D books. The art pulled me in. I'd just read the 6 original Elric books and saw a drawing of him and Stormbringer in the Deities & Demigods.

I asked what it was. A table of mixed strangers told me to pull up a chair and explained the game to me. I was hooked. In no time, I was DMing and had found "my people".

We were the OG outcasts. The misfits. The weirdos. And we didnt care. We loved our fantastic stories. We created wild adventures and reimagined our favorite books through games. We embraced being different and loved it.

Ive played games all over the world and this was almost always the experience. Outsiders coming together to have FUN. We never cared about politics, sexuality, pigment, or any other inane nonsense.

We became friends because of the hobby. All of us. The game was an excuse for friends to get together and have fun.

We need to somehow get back to this. The basics. I dont believe that most people really want to hate. I believe most spew because they think it is the new norm. It shouldnt be.

I believe that people still want that basic connection. To belong to something. Gaming is that something.

Not everyone will agree with everything from everyone - and thats fine - itd be a boring world if we did. But surely we can agree on one thing... gaming is meant to be fun.

If youve read this far, thank you. I urge you to think on this. Think about how you could encourage positivity within our beloved hobby.

Think about what brought YOU into the hobby. Think about the joy you first felt when you let your imagation fly. Then share that with someone else.

It's okay to play and enjoy Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition or any earlier edition) without needing to buy the new books, use D&D beyond, or use any of the new/changed rules.

You can create Homebrew, run 3rd party Modules & Adventures. Use other VTTs & character builders.
