You seem to suggest that if one person escapes, the sentence is wrong. While I talk about the much broader approach of "In general, people weren't able to flee from the GDR.

My uncle took the legal way and asked to leave. After 2 years he got the okay and had to leave within a week. That was in 1988. If the wall hadn't fallen I would never have known him.

In general it is a very prohibitive measure. Chances were you got shot or caught and went to jail for a very long time. And afterwards you were a pariah.

@LintBig @JonahDispatch Doesn't matter how noble their goals are. Once you accept that, separation of power is the only way that makes sense. And the only way to achieve that is democracy. And - to some extent - capitalism.

It might not be perfect, but every other possibility is even more flawed...
