This is Tanoti's loom. It's made up of pieces of wood, nuts, bolts, metal parts & string. The simple construction has produced exquisite fabrics & innovative textiles. Many products of this loom have travelled miles, circling the globe, winning awards locally & internationally.
Today, we celebrate the power of the loom. We thank all weavers for continuing to safeguard old techniques & traditions through their looms.
May handlooms survive this era of automation, may weavers continue to strive in their work, & may handweaves thrive for generations to come
This is our Christmas tree this year, simple and meaningful. Lovingly crafted by hands using fibres from our rainforests, these ornaments on the tree tell the story of culture, creativity, connections and our commitment to craft. From our hearts into your hearts and homes.
We are most grateful to the management of One&Only Desaru Coast for the opportunity to disseminate our knowledge of rattan crafting to its guests, and are pleased to see that they love the mini rattan art pieces which they have made!
Our artisans Alisya and Susan from Batu Bungan, Mulu are at One&Only Desaru Coast @oodesarucoast this week, to give workshops to hotel guests on Penan rattan basketry.
They bring with them rattan splits harvested from wild rattan growing in our Sarawak’s rainforests, so that workshop participants get the feel of weaving this highly pliable prized fibre.

We are very thankful to be featured in the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Regional Report on Women in Tourism in Asia and the Pacific. A big thanks to Dr Catherine Khoo for seeking out Tanoti to be in this report.
We feel that tourism is a natural fit for crafts. Letting others experience the beauty of making traditional crafts is both a great way to generate awareness and increase the income of the artisans.

"All eligible Malaysians should vote because democracy is precious. We should not rob ourselves of our freedom to choose our leaders. Many countries in this world do not even grant their citizens this basic right." - Jackie Fong

c.The Omadal Island community of Semporna, Sabah with their pandanus (Pandanus tectorius) weaves
These Bajau Laut women use traditional skills and knowledge of weaving pandanus leaves to earn a living by producing mats, bags, pencil boxes and other products.
We are at the WWF 50th Anniversary Conservation Conference in Kota Kinabalu today. It was stressed that the conservation of our forests always goes hand in hand with protecting the indigenous communities who are, by their nature, guardians of these lands.
b.Kampung Beris Tok Ku community of Terengganu with their kercut (Lepironia articulata) weaves
This group uses a wetland plant named kercut by the locals in Terengganu & produce various items such as pouches, purses, baskets, & mats made from kercut to be sold.
