Why reservation should not be removed — my strong factual arguments kindly read because you seem you didnt know.

1. Historical discrimination does not disappear immediately
* Reservation was introduced partly to address centuries of caste-based exclusion and discrimination.
* Social disadvantage can continue across generations even after legal discrimination is prohibited.
2. Equality of opportunity is not always the same as formal equality
* Giving everyone exactly the same opportunity does not necessarily produce a level playing field when people start from very different social and economic circumstances.
* Reservation is intended as a form of substantive equality—trying to make opportunities genuinely accessible.
3. Representation matters
* Historically disadvantaged communities have been underrepresented in many institutions.
* Reservation helps increase representation in education, public employment and political institutions.
4. Education and employment can break intergenerational disadvantage
* A government job or access to higher education can substantially improve a family’s socioeconomic position.
* The benefit can extend to the next generation through better education, income and social mobility.
5. Caste discrimination still exists
* Although India has strong constitutional protections against untouchability and caste discrimination, social discrimination has not completely disappeared.
* Therefore, the argument that reservation is unnecessary simply because discrimination is legally prohibited is incomplete.
6. The Constitution itself recognises the need for affirmative action
* Articles 15(4), 15(5) and 16(4) allow special provisions/reservation for disadvantaged groups under specified circumstances.
* Article 46 directs the State to promote the educational and economic interests of weaker sections, particularly SCs and STs.
* So reservation isn’t fundamentally opposed to equality; it is one constitutional mechanism intended to advance equality.
7. Reservation is not simply a poverty-relief programme
* Poverty and social/caste disadvantage overlap but are not identical.
* A financially better-off person can still experience caste-based social discrimination.
* This is one reason why reservation cannot be reduced entirely to an income-based scheme.
8. Removing reservation overnight could reverse representation gains
* If historical disadvantages haven’t disappeared, abruptly removing affirmative action could disproportionately affect communities that have only recently gained meaningful access to institutions.
9. Reservation has produced measurable representation gains
* In areas where reservation has been implemented, historically disadvantaged communities have gained greater access to educational institutions, public employment and elected bodies.
* That doesn’t mean the system is perfect—it means its impact should be assessed and improved rather than automatically abolished.
10. The better question is reform, not simply abolition

* A strong position is: “Reservation should continue, but it should be periodically reviewed and better targeted.”
* Possible reforms include stronger implementation, preventing misuse, improving school education, addressing economic disadvantage separately, and ensuring benefits reach those who remain genuinely disadvantaged. Reservation should not be abolished merely because formal equality has been achieved in law. It should continue as long as substantial social and educational disadvantages persist, while the system itself should be periodically reviewed and reformed to ensure that benefits reach those who genuinely need them.”
