NO SHOW! Cameroon's🇨🇲 President Paul #Biya, 93, has spent the last 45 days abroad, and now faces mounting criticism over the continued absence from work.

Biya, the ‌world's oldest head of state, left Cameroon on June 7 for what the civil cabinet described as "a brief private stay in Europe" and has since not returned. The government has provided no information as to when he might be back.

In office since 1982, Biya has for years spent extended stretches in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe, though his advanced age means they have increasingly fuelled speculation about ​his health, whereabouts and ability to govern. The current overseas trip is his ​longest yet.

After a similarly extended period out of the country in 2024, the ‌government banned discussion ⁠of Biya's health.

Opposition lawmakers are now pressing the Constitutional Court to declare the position of head of state vacant.

Today, I celebrate a great friend: Professor Benedict Okey Oramah GCON. No title or accolade can truly personify his greatness.

For decades, he has championed a simple but profound idea: that Africa’s prosperity must be an economic imperative, championed by Africans and not a charitable aspiration of the West.

Over more than ten years at the helm of Afreximbank, Professor Oramah redefined what an African multilateral institution could achieve. He made the Bank feel personable, approachable, and directly impactful to the private sector. He gave meaning and urgency to tangible development goals by anchoring them to a steadfast belief that African capital, mobilised with discipline and deployed with purpose, could shape the continent’s future on its own terms.

That kind of institution building is never accidental. It is the product of vision, persistence, and the courage to keep going long after others have stopped believing.

I have witnessed many inspirational and consequential conversations he has led on the imperative of Africa’s economic unity and development, capital, sovereignty, and what African institutions must become if they are to truly serve African people. Many of those conversations have informed decisions and cross-border transactions whose impact is still being felt across the continent.

Africa stands stronger today because of the decades Professor Oramah has devoted to its progress.

I met my Spanish Bazzukulu this evening at State House Entebbe after the completion of their fourth annual volunteer mission in Uganda. For the last four years, they have supported vulnerable communities in Gomba District by constructing school facilities, improving access to clean water and undertaking other outreach activities. Congratulations to Miatta Fahnbulleh @Miatsf on your truly historic and trailblazing appointment as Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. I want to underscore that no one in energy community is missing what this represents.

If UK citizens see success in energy especially on exploring for energy at the North Sea, this will be a good step. Energy Security, Jobs and Economy, Lower Bills and reducing GHG emissions should be on the table.

At the African Energy Chamber, we applaud this appointment and hope the leadership she has been called to provide and the signal it sends about where the world’s energy conversation and action must go next: pragmatism on energy, and commonsense on climate change. We believe the path forward must be realistic grounded in reliable power today.

Africans are so proud of this appointment and should be. It shows you can accomplish anything if you do the hard work. But she is the Energy Secretary of the UK NOT Africa. She is there to pursue UK interest and rightly so.

Public Service Minister Joseph Le has issued a four-month suspension for Mrs. Tchoukou Meah Marcelline, Regional Delegate for the West region, for what he described as "serious breaches of her professional obligations."

In a release dated July 11, Minister Le stated that the civil administrator "shall not receive salary or salary-related benefits" during the suspension period, but may continue to receive family allowances.

He added that she may only resume duty "with the express authorization of the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reform."

The suspension is one of the rare disciplinary measures seen in government ministries in Cameroon, where officials accused of corruption, embezzlement, absenteeism, and mismanagement of resources are seldom punished.

Nathalie Roy, President of the National Assembly of Quebec, Canada, has been elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF), succeeding Hilarion Etong of Cameroon.

The leadership change occurred on July 11 at the close of the institution's 51st session in Yaounde, which brought together over 400 parliamentary leaders from French-speaking countries worldwide.

Nathalie Roy takes over from Hon Etong, who serves as First Vice-President of Cameroon's National Assembly.

In her acceptance speech, she expressed a willingness to learn and share with her colleagues, stating that the evolution of the Francophonie will occur through dialogue for the well-being of Francophone populations.

The APF, created in 1967, brings together 99 members from parliaments and inter-parliamentary organisations across five continents, all sharing the French language.

It serves as a political forum for debate, proposals, and information exchange on matters of common interest.

The Court of First Instance of Bonanjo was once again packed on Friday, July 10, 2026. The hearing on Jacques Bertrand Mang's application for bail attracted the usual crowd of onlookers, relatives, and supporters, who turned out in large numbers despite the morning heat in Douala.

The defense team featured several prominent lawyers, including Me Alice Nkom, the highly respected dean of the Cameroonian Bar, Me Michael Khumbah Asong, known for his candidacy in the 2025 presidential election, Me Augustin Nguefack, and several other counsel representing the activist. Since their client's arrest, the legal team has left no stone unturned in his defense.

After hearing the prosecution's submissions and the defense's arguments, the judge decided not to issue an immediate ruling, opting instead to take more time to consider the matter. The court has therefore scheduled its decision for July 17. Until then, Jacques Bertrand Mang will remain at New Bell Central Prison, where he has already spent several days.

It is important to note that the July 17 decision concerns only his request for provisional release on bail. The trial on the merits of the case will follow its own schedule once this stage has been concluded.
