Hundreds of Mennonites gathered today with @MennoniteAction in DC and about 150 were arrested while singing and praying as they participated in the rich tradition of nonviolent direct action — calling for a ceasefire in the Congress rotunda.

Watch the video - it’s so moving. It is powerful to see this particular witness, from a tradition of Christianity known for its historic commitment to nonviolence. Also, I think their posters are actually quilts - which is totally awesome, and totally Mennonite. And the song they are singing is one of my favorite songs of the church “The Canticle of Turning.” I’ll post the lyrics here, which speak of destroying our weapons and turning from war to peace.

Grateful for this holy, beautiful, prophetic witness today… and for the Jesus-centered faith of the Mennonite church.

We need more of this.

It was John Lewis who said - when we get arrested for the good trouble, we can smile in our mugshots because we know are on the right side of history.
