A new PhD in town: meet Dr. Julian Rackwitz!
But seriously: How often do you hear about vibrations, partial dislocations and bacteria in a single PhD defense?
Thanks to my colleague Prof. Greg Olson for the co-supervision of this young superstar!

This is a rare and exciting moment – check it out!
3) ...And congrats to our past & present undergraduate researchers for landing wonderful new positions!
Lucas Marden -> Scientist @Outokumpu
Sierra Green -> PhD in MSE at @CarnegieMellon
Lauryn Kortman -> PhD in Nuclear eng. at Michigan
Kirmina Monir -> PhD in MSE at UCSB
2) Jiyun has accepted a faculty position in the Materials Science & Engineering Department of University of California Berkeley @BerkeleyMSE@UCBerkeley! What an amazing achievement from Dr. Kang (who is about to be Prof. Kang).
Some great news!
1) Felicity will be joining the Centre for Nuclear Engineering at Imperial, as a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow, to start her own research group on materials degradation / characterization for nuclear power! Congrats Dr. Worsnop!
With lots of laughter, pizza, speeches & gifts, we have said farewell to Michela (well, now Prof. Geri!).
Follow her magic in Duke: https://t.co/ixWkUfTn5l
Important times – this semester we were able to welcome six new grad students in our group: Future is so bright with Alex, Can, Minho, Berk, Abhi and You Na!
A proud moment: our post-doc Dr. Prafull Pandey is leaving the group to join IIT Gandhinagar @iitgn as an Assistant Professor! Prafull did his PhD with Prof. Kamanio Chattopadhyay, and has demonstrated all kinds of magic as a post-doc here in alloy design. Thanks Prafull for all!
We've just said farewell to Dr. Felicity Worsnop, who received the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt fellowship to continue out her amazing research in Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung! Congratulations again Felicity, and thanks for everything 🤠
Talking about good news and proud moments, here is another one: our wonderful post-doc Dr. Michela Geri just landed a well deserved tenure-track faculty position in the Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science of @DukeU! Wow! Congrats Michela!
Now it is time to say farewell to Dr. Shaolou Wei - not only a brilliant mind/scientist, but also a great team member, friend, role model… Viel Glück Shaolou!
Saying farewell, with very mixed feelings, to Dr. Hyunseok Oh (@hyunseok07), who joins the MSE department at UW-Madison as an Assistant Professor, and to Dr. Jiyun Kang, who joins @GuLabStanford at Stanford as a post-doc. May the force be with them!
New PhDs: Dr. Haoxue Yan & Dr. Jiyun Kang! Had so much fun learning about micro-strain localization, and H effects on dislocations, with these amazing scientists. Haoxue is now a post-doc with Prof. Kunal Mukherjee at @Stanford. Jiyun will stay with us a bit more. Congrats again!
