My wife's aunt worked in hospice care for over 30 years. She retired a few years ago, but she told us stories that have stayed with me ever since. Two of them still hit me hard.
The first was about an elderly man who had no living family, He'd outlived everyone.
The staff took turns sitting with him during his final days so he wouldn't die alone.
On his last afternoon, he opened his eyes, looked out the window at the spring sunshine, smiled, and said:
"It's such a beautiful day, Don't let this spoil it."
Five minutes later, he was gone.
My wife's aunt said she's never forgotten that. The man had nothing left, no family, no possessions, no unfinished business, and his final words were telling the people caring for him not to be sad. That's grace.
The second story was harder to hear.
There was a woman in her 80s, dying of cancer. For days, she kept repeating the same thing over and over: "Not until they're all here, Not until they're all here."
Her family was confused, Everyone *was* there, her daughters, her grandchildren, everyone she'd been close to.
Finally, one of the daughters admitted: There was a son, The woman had disowned him decades earlier over something no one would talk about. They tried to track him down, but they couldn't find him in time.
She died still calling for him, Still crying for her boy.
My wife's aunt said that was the one that broke her heart the most. Because whatever happened between them, in the end, none of it mattered. She just wanted to see her child one more time.
Life is short, Grudges are long, Make peace while there's still time.
