Vagif Khachatryan, 68, is an Armenian citizen of Artsakh. He was abducted in July by Azerbaijani forces while being transported to Armenia by the Red Cross to undergo emergency heart surgery.
Khachatryan has since been illegally incarcerated in Azerbaijan. He is accused of trumped up charges that could lead to a 20-year or life imprisonment sentence. His first hearing was held on October 13, during which he was seen distressed and in tears.
The only reason for Khachatryan’s imprisonment, abuse and torture is because he’s an Armenian.
Many Armenian civilians and prisoners of war have been tortured and murdered by Azerbaijan. This is in despite of a 2020 agreement that Azerbaijan signed to release them.
Azerbaijan bears the responsibility to ensure full respect for the rights & security of Karabakh Armenians
The use of force to resolve disputes is not acceptable
We note the announcements of a ceasefire and expect the cessation of hostilities to hold

We are sharing our recent Op-Ed again for background information. Sadly, the potential for genocide of Armenians Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh is worse now because of full-scale attacks by Azerbaijan on the civilian population after months of blockade & starvation. We appeal to the US government & international community to intervene immediately to prevent a humanitarian disaster. Follow the links @ArmenianUCLA@esrailian for more information on the crisis & to learn how you can help
After the ceasefire, for 32 hours, Azerbaijan doesn’t allow the Artsakh side to take many bodies of our soldiers & civilians under their control.
Sure, many injured persons could be survived if Azerbaijanis had given that chance.
An example of their “humanitarian” approach.
My rough and unofficial assessment shows that over 4,000 people of Artsakh have been evacuated from their communities due to Azerbaijani genocidal aggression.
Six communities have been fully evacuated, while others have been partially evacuated. The number is increasing.
120,000 people, including 30,000 children, 2,000 pregnant women, 20,000 older persons, who have been facing severe hunger, malnutrition and deprivation of all vital products and goods during the 9-month blockade, are now subjected to a physical threat due to the full-scale terrorist attack by the Azerbaijani armed forces launched on September 19, 2023.
This is nothing short of ethnic cleansing and genocide, which Azerbaijan carries out in broad daylight.
The international community MUST take immediate and urgent actions to stop another crime against humanity!
120,000 civilians including 30,000 children in Nagorno Karabakh are under military attack.
Azerbaijan has restarted war against Nagorno Karabakh, shelling civilians and civilian infrastructure after 9 months of deliberate blockade, famine and denial of humanitarian access.
As experts have said - this is Genocide.
I call on my fans, the world of sports and media colleagues to react and help spread the voice for restoring peace.
Children are NOT a target, and yet 1 child has already been killed and 11 injured. @UNICEF@unicefarmenia #NagornoKarabakh
