BREAKING: The U.S. Space Force is giving SpaceX broad freedom to design its new $2.3 billion military satellite backbone - including how many satellites it needs to build.

Rather than prescribing a constellation size or design, the Pentagon is setting requirements for coverage, capacity and speed and letting SpaceX determine the architecture, SpaceNews reports.

The government-owned Space Data Network will use optical links to move military data around the world, connecting sensors, command systems and weapons through a high-speed network in low Earth orbit.

The approach effectively allows SpaceX to apply the manufacturing, networking and constellation expertise developed through Starlink to a purpose-built military system, while the Space Force focuses on the performance it needs rather than dictating the hardware.

$SPCX is required to deliver a fully operational prototype by the end of 2027.
