@TexasTribune Nothing addressing public education funding. NOTHING! The current student allotment is $6160. It was last raised in 2019. Texas has an 18 billion dollar budget surplus, but Abbott/GOP won't use any of it to fund public schools. We all know why.
@JayWamsted I was teaching high school debate. One of my students came to my door, interrupted my class, and said, "Ms. T. You need to turn on your TV." It was on the rest of the day. Quiet classes that day. The kids and I rode the emotional roller coaster together.
@AlecMacGillis@JonHaidt Spot on article. It's not about having a rule against phones in class. It's about having rules about phones that are responsive to all the research about kids and phones. Just the presence of the phone in the student's zone of awareness destroys focus and learning.
Congratulations to Josef Newgarden on his first Indy500 win! And to the race itself for an excellent lesson in the art of suspense. #Indy500#writingmystery
@matthewjdowd But they will vote for him anyway because he is their way worse than awful. Because women and people of color don't yet know their place. Because a poor person might get a dime more than they "deserve". Because their preacher tells them democrats will go to hell.
@_be_by A charter school is a hybrid of public (funded by taxes) and private (funded by tuition) K-12 school. Charters receive funding from the state (through taxes), but are not held to the same rules and standards that apply to public schools. Proponents see them as innovative.
@galbeckerman@TalyaZax I reread Lord Peter mysteries constantly. For the characters, who feel like old friends, for the quest to see justice served, which is usually less satisfying than anticipated, and for the philosophical commentary on the nature of humanity with all its flaws.
@daveweigel The Prince of Tides. The movie eliminated the character who was The Prince of Tides. A book that was all Southern and Gothic and Coming of Age became a movie about neurotic New Yorkers.
@debbshock Terms of Endearment. Tear up when Emma sticks her head out of the car window to look back at Texas. Ugly cry through "give my daughter the shot". Complete catharsis.
@TengoNY @ElieNYC Reasonable R's don't exist in the house. More importantly it would be profoundly foolish to make any type of deal with a group who has proven to be profoundly untrustworthy, duplicitous.
