Ok ma’am … I’ll tell you what your dude friend didn’t have the heart (or self-awareness) to tell you. Life is very hard and very unfair. No one gets to do what makes them happy, at least not without a generous trust fund. Men have been socialized to understand this reality, so our expectation is that if we work hard we will eventually have a job/career that is generally tolerable and that we’re reasonably good at doing. In exchange, we get money and a fleeting sense that we’re fulfilling our cosmic purpose (to provide for ourselves and our loved ones). That’s as good as it ever gets. Any one who tries to sell you a better story than this is lying to you to either sell you something or to get in your pants.
