Mark Cuban: "I pay what I owe."
Elizabeth Warren: names Tesla, Disney & Palantir for paying $0.
Does public shaming on #tax avoidance actually work? A new study says yes — and the effect is strongest on the exact people being called out.

The IRS just proposed a rule that could strip tax-exempt status from ~18,000 private schools over racial discrimination — hitting admissions, scholarships, athletics & financial aid.

Due to tax incentives, most of the Avengers movies are filmed in GA with Hunger Games in NC.
#Trump just called for taking those tax incentives national.

Mark Cuban & Ro Khanna had a heated X exchange over CA's Prop 40 (5% billionaire #wealthtax).
@mcuban: illiquid startup equity, capital flight, spending > taxing.
@RoKhanna: most wealth is liquid public stock, some billionaires back it.

The Lakers just sold for a record $12.5B. Mark Walter & Co netted ~$3B.
But b/c they bought the stake in two pieces (2021 + 2025) and part of that gain could be short-term — a timing quirk that could swing his tax bill by ~$200M.

Trump Accounts can now take pre-tax payroll contributions, w/employer matching.
A family in the 35% bracket saves $1,750 on a $5K contribution. A family in the 12% bracket saves just $600.
Same dollars in, very different benefit out.

Josh Allen and Trevor Lawrence are both paid $55M in 2026.
Allen’s estimated #jocktax bill: $5.65M
Lawrence’s: $220K
Same salary. $5.4M difference — just the tax code.

#Mamdani's pied-à-terre tax may not really about the $500M in revenue.
A wealthy non-resident with a $6M #NYC condo pays ~$426K to stay away.
Move in as a resident? The city collects ~$2M.
This #tax might be designed to be avoided — not paid.

Can government-run grocery stores actually beat the market on price?
#NYC is about to find out. 5 stores, 30% discounts, $70M in taxpayer funding — and some real economic theory working against it. My @Forbes breakdown:

UK #Powerball's jackpot was advertised at £300M ($400M). The US jackpot for the same draw: $567M. Not a FX quirk. A #tax quirk.
The US number is pre-tax. The UK number is what winners actually take home. Check out my @Forbes article breaking this down.

"Tax the rich" hits the ballot for real this November.
CA voters decide on a 5% billionaire wealth tax. WA voters decide whether to keep a millionaire income tax already signed into law.
~14% of America. Two very different tests of the same idea.

Illinois just did something no other state has: enact a tax for moving crypto (rather than income generated from the transactions)
Starting January 1, 2027, the state's new Digital Asset Tax Act charges 0.2% on every crypto transaction — buy, sell, transfer, even between your own wallets. Sell Bitcoin for $75,000 and you owe $150 to Illinois. It doesn't matter if you bought it for $100,000 and took a loss.
No state taxes investments this way, raising concerns about the plausibility of this tax.

Trump Accounts launched July 4. Everyone's talking about the $1,000 seed for newborns. Almost nobody's talking about what happens next.
The real tax-advantaged benefit: $5,000/year in contributions from parents, grandparents, friends, or employers — up to $91K by 18, tax-deferred, with flexible payouts (education, first home, small business, or Roth IRA rollover).

Prediction markets went from <$5B/month to $24B/month in trading volume in 7 months — now bigger than legal sports betting.
Why? They dodge state gambling taxes AND operate in states like CA/TX where sportsbooks cannot
States are now suing, banning, and taxing them back. My latest for @Forbes below:

California’s “Billionaire Tax” will officially be headed to the ballot this November. While many view the one-time 5% tax on a billionaire’s wealth as the right path to fund budget shortfalls, this tax has the potential to be felt by billionaires and non-billionaires alike.
This Forbes article breaks down three key ways in which those not directly subject to the tax may face burdens of taxation associated with the wealth tax. In particular, the wealth tax could:
(1) Lower overall tax collections (due, in part, to capital flight)
(2) Be difficulty and costly to enact and collect the taxes
(3) Spur corparate relocations
Learn more about these points and more in the link the the article below.
