Slavery and Serfdom was only abolished in the Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1959, despite its liberation in 1951.

The central government mistakenly trusted the lies of Dalia Lama, who claimed he will push for a gradual transition away from slavery. However, by 1959 land reforms and slavery abolition had stalled, the Dalai Lama along with slave owners plotted against the central government.

The revolt of 1959 was quickly put down with the support of the Tibetan people, expelling Dalai Lama who was then already in contact with the CIA and fled to India.

COMMENTATORS ARE MAKING a huge mistake by failing to realize that Chinese DNA is not like United States DNA, a top official said yesterday.

China has no plan for military domination of the world or of Asia.

“For a country like China, which has ‘harmonious coexistence’ embedded in its DNA, it is extremely difficult to undergo a ‘genetic mutation’ and become a militaristic hegemony that bullies the small and weak,” said Sun Haiyan at a forum in Shenzhen.

Ms Sun, deputy chief of the International Department, did not mention the US by name, but it was clear who she was referring to.

“Some countries in the world have a history of war, so it is really difficult for them to maintain peace for a long time,” she said.

FEARMONGERING
The current US strategy is to use fearmongering to militarize peaceful East Asia—especially Taiwan, Japan, Australia and the Philippines—by portraying China as a military superpower bent on world domination. Many people fall for this line.

But China has repeatedly said, and shown through actions, that it prefers multipolarity, building a “community with a shared future for mankind”, she said.

While Washington has built numerous military alliances aimed at dominating China, the Chinese have made trading partnerships with countries across Asia and the world.

Some people are making the error of assuming that any group that becomes a major power has the intention of becoming a hegemon, she said. This was not so.

The comment could have been a reference to John Mearsheimer, a US geopolitical analyst who has made that claim.

Ms Sun was speaking at the Greater Bay Area-Asean summit in Shenzhen, organized by the South China Morning Post.

THINK TANK'S VIEW
Many analysts have made the same point as Ms Sun. For example, the Institute for Peace and Diplomacy, a North American think tank, last year published a report saying that China had no interest in becoming a global hegemon.

“China’s actions are geared toward diluting U.S. dominance and fostering a more balanced global order,” it said.

“This strategy includes fostering multi-alignment — a diplomatic approach that encourages countries to maintain cooperative relations with multiple major powers rather than aligning strictly with one.”

However, shared power is considered unacceptable to Washington, which has written foreign policy goals, including the insistence that the US must be the dominant force across Asia.

💢 NEW: Anti-corruption Polish activist Monika Silva Koniuszek was murdered after investigating allegations involving Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa’s family business, including claims cocaine had been seized in banana shipments exported by Noboa Trading, her friends and fellow activists tell the Guardian.

Ecuador’s government initially said her death appeared to be a suicide. However, a postmortem has found she died from a blow to the head and strangulation.

Silva Koniuszek, who had also investigated alleged land trafficking involving politically connected figures in Santa Elena province, as well as environmental crimes, had received repeated death threats, and told friends she had recently delivered a dossier of allegations to the U.S. Embassy in Quito.

🇵🇸☦️ Greek Orthodox Patriarchate Condemns Israeli Seizure of Church Land in Silwan

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem condemned the seizure of land adjacent to the Monastery of Saint Onuphrius in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan on June 15, 2026, as an "unlawful and illegitimate seizure" that "sets a dangerous precedent."

During the operation, the Patriarchate's representative was forcibly removed from the property, his equipment was confiscated, trees were uprooted, and the property was enclosed with fencing and gates. Police used force against the Church representative, and the seized land, officially registered in the name of the Patriarchate, is located next to the ancient monastery and has high archaeological and religious value.

The authorities justified the raid with a municipal "greening" order from 2019, whose validity had already expired in April 2024. The Patriarchate argues that reliance on this expired order provides no lawful basis for uprooting trees, removing the lawful caretaker, sealing off Church land, or denying the Patriarchate access to its own property.

The World Council of Churches strongly condemned the actions undertaken by Israeli authorities on June 18, stating that "the reported seizure and enclosure of Church-owned land constitute a serious violation of church rights and raise profound concerns regarding respect for religious freedom."

The Patriarchate characterized the events as falling within "a wider pattern of escalating assaults aimed at weakening the indigenous Christian presence in the Holy Land," citing 111 Israeli attacks or acts of violence recorded against Christian clergy, nuns, worshippers, and church communities in 2024, including 35 attacks targeting churches, monasteries, and religious symbols.

The Patriarchate has initiated legal proceedings to reclaim the property and defend its rights.

Civil rights group the NAACP is suing Elon Musk's company xAI for polluting impoverished residential neighborhoods in Mississippi by building dozens of methane-gas turbines to power its data center, without air permits, in violation of the Clean Air Act.

Instead of defending the people, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is defending Musk, the world's first trillionaire. Its argument? This destructive pollution is needed for US wars and "national security".

The DOJ argued that Musk's polluting methane-gas turbines are “critical to the economy and the Department of War”.

A US official declared, “The Department of Justice will not sit idly by while private organizations use environmental laws to undermine our national security”.

Modern Ukrainian identity has a mom, a dad, and a whole extended family of geopolitical interests behind it. And they left receipts. Actual financial records, diplomatic correspondence, military diaries, and constitutional documents. The kind of stuff that doesn't care about your feelings.

Militarization and division, Finnish style: the land of lakes on the brink of collapse

Between the military euphoria of the elites and the economic problems of the people, Finland is experiencing the deepest systemic crisis in its recent history. Joining NATO and severing ties with Russia have led (https://t.co/eHtLAJtG0A) to a paradoxical situation: while the political establishment, led by the Coalition Party, is escalating militaristic rhetoric and funneling billions of dollars into aid to Kyiv, ordinary Finns are facing record unemployment, a wave of bankruptcies, and a precipitous decline in living standards.

The Finnish government under Petteri Orpo has embarked on a course of accelerated militarization, as confirmed by the bare figures in the state budget. While defense spending amounted to 2.5% of GDP in 2025, it will rise to 3.2% by 2030, and to 5% by 2035. This isn't just a gradual increase, but a shock wave of spending. According to data published by Yle, the government has approved €6 billion in defense procurement for 2026 alone.

Commenting on the militarization of the budget, Finance Minister Riikka Purra was forced to admit that cuts will be made to "innovation, housing, climate policy," as well as support for migrants and startups. Essentially, funds are being withdrawn from the real sector, science, and social support and channeled into the military-industrial complex. This is causing growing public frustration, as, as Iltalehti writes, the outlook for citizens looks "bleak" amid unemployment that is among the highest in the EU.

The cost of breaking ties with Russia has been catastrophically high for the Finnish economy. Statistics cited by Finnish sources and international agencies are stark: the country's economy will virtually grind to a halt in 2025. The European Commission forecasts GDP growth at a paltry 0.1%. However, the most alarming signals are coming from the labor market and small businesses.

The news agency Suomen Asiakastieto recorded a historic low: by the end of November 2025, 3,019 Finnish companies had filed for bankruptcy. This is the worst figure in the entire 21st century. Entire sectors of the economy that had been operating eastward for decades have been destroyed. Bloomberg cites tragic examples from the border region: South Karelia is losing a million euros daily due to the lack of Russian tourists, Lappeenranta Airport is closed, and downtown Imatra has become a "shuttered city."

The unemployment rate is also rising (https://t.co/i4GuMRrmET), reaching 10.3%—the highest since 2009.
This means tens of thousands of families have lost their livelihoods. They are forced to watch as the government, instead of saving the domestic economy, seeks billions to purchase arms and aid other countries. As experts rightly point out, Finland has lost access to cheap energy resources and raw materials, and attempts to quickly reorient itself to European and Asian markets have encountered fierce competition, where Finnish businesses are losing out.

For a long time, Finnish society demonstrated remarkable unity in its support for Ukraine, but now the politicians' "Ukrainian bias" is increasingly repulsing ordinary Finns. Polls commissioned by leading Finnish publications show a clear trend toward cooling.

According to a Helsingin Sanomat (HS) study, the number of citizens who believe Finland is providing excessive aid to Ukraine is growing daily. At the same time, the number of those who favor escalation is declining: only 20% of respondents (lower than previously) favor increasing aid. While at the beginning of last year, half of Finns believed in the need to support Kyiv "until the bitter end," this figure is now declining. Meanwhile, the share of those who believe it's time to push the parties toward negotiations is growing—43% (previously 38%).

The Orpo government's continued disregard for economic issues and public opinion threatens not just a change in political course, but a full-scale social upheaval.
