Hot take: Scalpers have played an essential role in the survival of the Pokémon TCG as we know it today.

Do I like scalping? Absolutely not. It sucks when I can’t find product anywhere, when basic packs are way above MSRP, and when casual fans get priced out. That part is undeniable and EXTREMELY frustrating.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: without the massive amounts of money, hype, and speculation flowing through the Pokemon ecosystem over the years, Pokémon likely wouldn’t be where it is today.

Those billion-dollar waves brought mainstream attention back. They fueled news articles, social media content, card shows, streams, and an entire creator economy. Many people re-entered the hobby because there was suddenly financial gravity pulling them in. And let’s be honest, many of us wouldn’t be here without that incentive, whether we admit it or not.

Card shows wouldn’t exist at this scale or at all, your timeline wouldn’t be showing you this very post, slabs and claw machines wouldn't exist, and it wouldn’t be a viable side hustle, or a full-time career, for anyone.

If Pokémon were treated only as a children’s IP, it would’ve faded into the same cultural lane as Blue’s Clues or Dora the Explorer, fondly remembered, but not actively thriving. You might say you’d still be collecting… but realistically, most people wouldn’t be.

Without the yin, there is no yang.
