When Issa Rae said “network across,” it took a minute to click for me, but now I get it. When all y’all on the come up, it feels fucking DIVINE. Like we got each other through it all and now we get to reap the benefits of our work. Sharing the journey is the gift✨
We cannot have sustainable energy because it threatens the oil industry. We cannot have healthcare because it threatens insurance. We cannot have peace because it threatens the weapons industry. Capitalism built a system where doing the right thing is treated like bad business.
Guillermo del Toro: “Be very angry about how the world is being fucked, how your craft is being pulled away from you, how people are trying to move you away from the arts and tell you they’re not important. Be angry that things are being controlled by socially barely functional people that have a lot of money. Be angry about something. Be enraged about something” (Video: anakinspadawan / TikTok)
Kat Williams saying "You having an unnatural allegiance to losers is not like you” plays at the forefront of my brain whenever I feel myself acting pathetic
Funny how my film is going viral and audiences are clearly saying “we want to see this” while financiers are still moving slow and waiting to see who bites first…
Audiences believe in a Black queer coming-of-age film more than the people with the power to fund one do.
A key lesson I'm learning is that there is so much more I can achieve in life and love when I get over the fear of embarrassment and do the thing anyway. Never be afraid of being a beginner and of trying.
Banning loans for degrees in early childhood education is 100% an intentional and tactical move. No experts in that field means they can indoctrinate children at an early age making it easier to push propaganda on them as they become adults
More than thirty girls, some as young as twelve, were arrested at a protest in Georgia and locked in an abandoned Civil War stockade in the middle of nowhere.
No beds. One broken toilet. No working shower. Burgers thrown in once a day.
Their parents were not told where they were.
July 1963. Leesburg, Georgia.
They had marched in Americus. Police took them, drove them twenty miles away, and put them in a concrete building that had not been used for anything in years.
They slept on a concrete floor. The window had no glass. It was July in south Georgia.
They were held for up to forty-five days. No charges were ever filed against them. No trial. Nothing.
Their mothers were driving around the county asking anyone who would talk to them where the children were.
A SNCC photographer named Danny Lyon eventually found the building and photographed them through the broken window — girls in summer dresses, standing on filthy concrete, looking straight into the lens.
Those photographs got into Jet and into Congress. That is how the parents found them. That is the only reason they came home.
Some of them are alive right now. They call themselves the Stolen Girls.
There are so many crimes against us like this no one ever answered for. We must know them and never forget. Our book documents 150 of those crimes https://t.co/V6OJtazidd
The man who invented the operation that saves babies born with blue-baby syndrome had no medical degree, no college degree, and was listed on the payroll as a JANITOR.
He guided the first operation from a stool behind the surgeon's shoulder, telling him where to cut.
Vivien Thomas. He had been saving to study medicine when the 1929 crash wiped out his savings and the bank holding them.
He took a job as a lab assistant at Vanderbilt for a janitor's wage, because that was the classification available.
Within a couple of years he was running experimental surgery — developing techniques, performing operations on his own, training surgeons.
He moved to Johns Hopkins with Alfred Blalock in 1941, where he was still paid as a janitor and had to enter through a back door.
He was the only Black man in that building not carrying a mop.
He worked out the surgical fix for tetralogy of Fallot — the condition killing infants who turned blue and died — and built the instruments for it.
The first operation on a child was in 1944. Blalock, who had never done the procedure, asked Thomas to stand behind him and talk him through it.
The surgeons on the paper became world famous. Thomas was not credited.
Hopkins hung his portrait in 1971 and gave him an honorary doctorate in 1976. Generations of surgeons he personally trained insisted on it.
He was paid as a cleaner while inventing heart surgery.
Every weekend, Cuban documentarian Gloria Rolando Casamayor sets up a portable projector and turns her street in Havana’s Colón neighborhood into a movie theater.
The screenings honor Cuba’s mobile cinema tradition, and give neighbors somewhere to gather when the power goes out.
I’m sorry, the clip of Zohran Mamdani getting on a Citi Bike while someone yells out “communist!” and him replying that it’s actually pronounced “cyclist” is forever etched in my mind.
I aspire to achieve this level of quick-witted and respectful clapbacks!
