With Tua, this probably ends in a sack or a checkdown to Achane. Willis escapes, keeps his eyes downfield, and creates an explosive. We know he can do this. If he can consistently make the easy plays too, he can become a very good quarterback.

I like this call early in the game. Give Malik Willis a quick, easy completion to help him settle in, then let the receiver create after the catch. It’s also a great extension of the run game: get the ball out fast and make the defense tackle in space.

Michael Taaffe made a couple of plays like this against San Francisco, coming downhill and showing the physicality you want from a safety. His size and tackling consistency were questioned during the draft process, so it’s encouraging to see him getting involved in the run game early.

One thing you saw a lot in Week 1 around the NFL was the split-backfield look. Split backfields make it harder for defenses to read run direction from the backs’ alignment.

Miami shows that look, then motions Malik Washington in and Achane out. Achane draws attention, and Washington gets the handoff. A small but creative wrinkle from Slowik.
