Every player that steps on a field and grabs a sticks is part of something much bigger than themselves. It was great to work with @PLL to honor Indigenous Heritage weekend. So much fun and great energy, itโs hard to put it into words.

@wlaxnut@laxmomproblems From our own perspective, the way that the game was a gift to us from higher powers to help us and how playing it reaffirms those connectionsโฆ.is what we dwell on more than how old the game is
@wlaxnut@laxmomproblems The image was painted in 1850, from sketch of game observed by US military officer Seth Eastman, a full 8 years before Minnesota became a state. European observations of the game in the upper Mississippi are at least 270 years old, easily predating the birth of the US.
We are so proud of all of the athletes who participated in the Junior Native Youth Olympics celebration!
For the first year, all eight elementary schools were represented, with 100 kids competing in traditional games like the two-foot high kick, seal hop and Inuit stick pull.
@rerunnat I went more negative ie. Fan dress/chants based in outdated and racist beliefs or tokenized References to Corporate charity work (surface level stuff vs true investment). I love competition and the game donโt get me wrong.
Very appropriate to have our friend Dr Lajimodiere speak to NLL on this topic. Anishinaabeg have played baagaโadowewin since the beginning of time and this Anishinaabekwe can shed important light into our complex history.
