We left Lebanon many decades ago because of war. We were living a normal happy life there. Going to school , seeing my grand parents on the weekend , spending time at the beach house with my cousins, eating delicious food , playing soccer in the street. Food was abondant , water was available and electricity was spotty but still somewhat available. I had a great childhood, some of the best memories. I was happy , I was proud of my country.

We left because war started getting closer and closer to home, it was always far away. Out of mind , out of sight , that’s how most Lebanese people lived. People would go out and party and go for birthdays while bombs fell towns over. It was “normal”. But one day , while coming back from school, I saw about 100 tanks going in the opposite direction of the school bus. My 8 year old self thought it was cool and remember making jokes with the other kids in the bus. But deep inside , I was scared. This was very close to home.
A few days later, bomba were raining in my town. Our own building was hit, people in the neighbourhood that we played with killed, overnight , just like that. One day you’re here , breathing , living , laughing and then gone.

I’m not sure why I’m telling you all this but reliving these moments while watching some of the images , videos in the recent events in Israel and Gaza is really really sad for me.

Don’t care what anyone says, there’s no winner’s in war. Go tell that to the mother that lost her baby or the father that wishes he could kiss his daughter one more time and hold her.

This is not about religion, race , or a political statement. I just wish people realized what’s been happening in Gaza and Israel is absolutely horrible. No regular citizen should be caught in the crossfire of two ideologies, but this is sadly always the case.

I have tons of Muslim friends and tons of Jewish friends. I’m Christian Lebanese myself , you can say I’m a Semite , an original Semite. The message here is in a few months , all these broken, distraught families will be forgotten and some other headline will take over the mainstream media but their lives will never be the same. The media is here only to throw fuel on the fire , the days of the media only being the messenger are long gone. All they want now is divide and disrupt and clicks.

Some things are just the way they are. I’ve learned to accept that. But I refuse to paint people , countries or religions all with the same brush. We’re all fuxk if human beings , we just forget that part when it’s convenient and supportive of our narrative and biases.

I leave you with the words of Anthony Bourdain. “Be open to a world where you might not understand or agree with the person next to you. But have a drink with them anyways.”
