With all the hot-button political issues I guess people don't want to hear about "lighter" subjects, but just wanted to share: went to 7-11. I observed an older man hyper-stressed as he was scratching off his lottery ticket and upon discovering he lost, going right back inside for more punishment. I thought, "Maybe I should give the poor guy $20, or even more."

Then I had the sad realization that if I did, he would 100% just use it to buy more lottery tickets. I am probably in the minority in believing gambling like this is far worse than our morally-desensitized culture says, but I see this often in different locations and it illustrates that gambling preys on the most vulnerable (to borrow a liberal phrase).

Yet I seriously doubt liberals would agree with me on this; libertarians certainly would not, and probably not even most conservatives. I used to scoff at the notion that gambling is a true addiction but I now know better. I watched up close and personal an otherwise highly principled friend ruin his life over the mess he got himself into from what began as innocent forays into gambling. He ended up in federal prison. Had you asked me two years before I would have told you he is the kind of guy you could safely entrust with your finances.

Like other addictions, it is not abused by everyone; maybe not even a majority. But it is definitely abused terribly and often by the people who can least afford it, and it's sad and tragic.
