6 tips to reduce stress of staff.
1) If you ask to meet with staff member, let them know why.
2) Don't address an issue you have with one person with the whole staff.
3) Praise a lot more than you critique
4) Fewer meetings
5) More encouragement/support
6) Encourage self care
The school choice folks sure won the branding war. It sounds so good when you put it that way.
If, instead, they called it “the dismantling of free and appropriate public education” I bet a lot less people would be in favor.
We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. They get 15 mins of recess every hour. They have NO standardized tests until the PISA in HS & they outperform us every time. When we can’t give students more recess, play, or Arts, but make them sit longer hours, we have it wrong!
The “parental rights” movement is one of the biggest grifts/scams in history for a variety of reasons, but mainly because:
- parents already have the right to see lesson plans, curriculums, etc.
- parents have more rights at public schools than at most private and charters
I often see amazing things created on TPT and I always wonder if the educator is tapped into at their district level as a leader or are they overlooked. Sadly, a lot of them seem to have actually left the profession completely because they felt undervalued.
Controversial opinion? Teachers Pay Teachers needs to go as does dropping supply lists on Donors Choose. Teachers- don’t let districts get away w/ making you fund what you need to do your job. Either the district provides/pays for it or it doesn’t happen.

Its interesting that in Finland, schools avg 5 hours per day and yet fit in 15 mins of recess every hour, but in the US we go 7 +hours and can’t fit in 10 mins total for recess.
If a 2nd grade word problem on a standardized test is written at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level, then you aren’t testing for math, you’re testing for above grade level reading. And doesn't reflect student knowledge of actual 2nd grade math curriculum.
