Artifact: a report card from 1926
As we start school this year let’s ask, do we still grade students on some of these expectations? Are they now just embedded into our subjective grading practices?
Do we teach students the skills we actually grade them on?

Thanks to our DPS (Duck Protection Squad), Custodian Price Wright and Art Teacher Jennifer Hensley, we have a protective cage at the nest and a floating ramp to get out of the pond when the water is too low. Hopefully this will protect them from the neighborhood Red Tail Hawk
Great news! The ducklings have hatched! We have been lucky to have a Mallard pair come back to our “pond” each year and nest. The construction removed the original, natural pond but we do have something to replace it. Glad we are 9 ducklings-strong now! Mama is very protective!
Congratulations to our 14 IB Seniors on their exhibition in the Crawford Gallery! It is so amazing to see how these students’ art represent their intersection with the world, their stories, their deep connections, their worries, and the windows into their futures! Thank you!
SME’s “Starlight Soirée” (Prom 2025) is about to begin! Great job to Ms. Chalk and the Prom Committee for putting together a wonderful evening! Let’s get this (garden) party started!
Lancer Nation salutes all of our women leaders on this International Women’s Day! Thank you to all who step into leadership to make Lancer Nation a strong, welcoming, supportive space for our community!
What a great way to kick off Music in Schools month in SMSD! The HS Chamber Choirs are in concert AND clinic at the same time! Dr. Buchanan is helping choirs and choir directors get better at the craft. This is a great model for instructional leadership & instructional coaching!
We made the quick pivot to a virtual PD day and it’s bringing back memories! Thanks for engaging in the virtual space on “Grading for Equity”. And thank you @theSMSD for helping facilitate safe and effective PL experiences today!
It’s School Resource Officer Appreciation Day and we can’t thank our SME SROs enough! Officer Wollen (SMSD PD) and Detective Shull (PVPD) help keep our school and community safe. We are so grateful for their service to our community! Thank you both!!!
A great day at Enrico Fermi High!!! And as Principal Strict says, “a nuclear attack is no excuse for a runny egg!” Break a leg SME Theatre!! #ZombieProm#LancerNation

“Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.” —MLK Jr (art by Mo Willems)
Teaching literacy strategies in the Social Studies classroom on point today! We might not be Reading Specialists, but we all teach reading strategies, no matter the course, no matter the grade level! @SMEastLancers@theSMSD
As teachers, how do plan for productive struggle? This “…incorporates other considerations into the process by taking into account what students might do, what they might struggle with, and what teachers can do in response.” @SMEastLancers @theSMSD
There isn’t any course in our system that can’t benefit from the ideas of invention! Classrooms driven by creativity and real world connections foster these skills! Great way to start professional learning @SMEastLancers@theSMSD!
UNESCO announcement, truer now more than ever…
