An anti-racist teacher (she/her), not so quietly working on her Texas Gubernatorial campaign. 😏
Everything is truly teachable & we have so much to learn.
I've been tweet-grumbling a lot lately*- so much so, that I've neglected celebrating #HispanicHeritageMonth properly & in a timely manner.
So, I'm gonna share the resources I would use/share with my teacher-friends, because that's what weird #ForeverTeachers do...
A #blerdy🧵
Happy Diwali all!
I appreciate the reminder that the light of knowledge does win out over the depths of ignorance.
And I'm grateful for loving friends who share their heritage & traditions. Love ya'll.
This.
And as a former History and Literature teacher for both AP and students needing SpEd services, I can tell you ALL of our students are more capable of delving into hard topics than elected officials seem to be.
They are not afraid to learn.
They know they have been lied to.

In April during discussion of the Anti-bias bill that started this whole avalanche of attacks on education, (While teachers were forced to give the STAAR during a pandemic mind you) only one district spoke out on behalf of it's students. HISD

Parents of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and LQBTQA+ kids should be outraged, but they are too busy trying to survive in a failed economy.
While rebuilding after the loss of a mismanaged pandemic.
They should be outraged but they are still just trying to make it.
What he should be researching and compiling a list on are the specifics & rationale for the massive teacher shortages.
I dare you to request those teacher exit surveys!
Teachers have been martyring themselves and working in severely toxic workplaces for years.
This is truly ridiculous...
With all the challenges districts currently face, this is not the best use of their time.
It's literally a literary witch hunt.
One well documented reason TX is 43rd in education is it's prolonged resistance to culturally-relevant books & instruction.
Rep. Matt Krause, Republican state lawmaker and state attorney general candidate, has launched an investigation into Texas school districts over the type of books they have, particularly if they pertain to race or sexuality.

And no double down on the Culture Wars will change the world kids live in.
Every kid deserves access to books that speaks to and reflects their existence.
Books were often my respite, my place of safety. That's the least we can give them.
Whining about "cancel-culture"...
Do you see any book on this LONG list that makes you feel "uncomfortable?" https://t.co/M6Dzalc1Y3
What's uncomfortable is the idea that books are being weaponized. We should be encouraging diversity & inclusion in all aspects of life, including the books our kids read.💯 #Txlege
And even worse, we are allowing the dismantling of programs and pedagogy that works.
Attacking anti-bias, equity and culturally-relevant curriculum in schools hurt kids and the people who care about them.
Why double-down on under-serving & under-educating kids, just for votes?
Last year around this time, we were all eager to re-imagine school. We were given a huge opportunity to dismantle systems and create something better. Here we are, a year later, and we are instead desperately doubling-down on all our old practices. We learned nothing.
* that being said why would he.
He has a huge new multi-million dollar, taxpayer-funded Co. jail to fill. And obviously he couldn't do that in a small town if his officers actually followed the rules.
(We'll talk about how struggling town's often cannibalize their own later...)
Amen.
And as ignorance continues to hold educational leaders, school boards and the entire concept of rigorous thought hostage- it has only gotten worse.
I followed the rules and made the complaints so they hopefully wouldn't be in the same situation with the same racist officer.
GCSD's Sheriff Ziwicke never filed it, never responded in writing per state guidelines, but this isn't the first time he protected this officer.
They need to hear the names of everyday activists and allies who moved us closer to this country's ideals.
So they can have to courage to so so as well.
Because there is still so much work to be done.
And maybe that's what those in power fear the most.
Racism touches kids lives, often daily and to cheat them of the lessons of history is pathetic
They deserve to see how people have endured, survived, and overturned injustice.
