@TrackCoachJones If teaching pays salary that's attractive, more people will consider entering the profession. Right now, in certain states it pays a salary that's barely enough to support one person. Why would a driven, highly-capable person take a teaching job if they can get more in corporate?
@educator4ever36@MissyPurcell TX has a dyslexia law & kids are screened either after not gaining ground in Tier 3 after a set time OR a parent can request and bypass all the data collection. Dys is under SPED. I have convinced a number of parents to have their kid screened and all so far have qualified.
@educator4ever36 Insurance companies are over-riding medical decisions made my doctors. But, I am not clear if it is to the degree that exists in teaching.
@MrDanielBuck@wil_da_beast630 I came to teaching after my kids were in HS. Spent years in corporate prior. Currently teaching 30 kids. Some came into the school year reading chapter books and some didn't know all their letter sounds. More kids would be the end of me. I guess I'll show myself out the door.
@educatedandfree@mapleblooded Laughed so hard. Spent many years standing by myself as a goalie mom watching some insane fights between parents. Best sport ever. lol
@educatedandfree@Will_Tanner_1 I teach 1st in a classical school, and it's a little better there. But, for kids who may not stay through the upper grades, I read with so much expression into my read alouds. I want the students to witness how words on a page can come alive. They have to see reading in action.
@NurseClaire2 I appreciate your knowledge so much, but here I'd love to give her grace. I was a SAHM & raised my kids to be well-behaved, but at that age they could act up if I talked 2 someone too long at the grocery store, or got on the phone. snippet shouldn't define her parenting skill.
One of the strongest arguments for teaching classic literature is simply this:
If students are never asked to inhabit minds from other times and cultures, they will confuse their own narrow historical moment with universal truth.
The canon is an antidote to chronological snobbery.
@MrZachG We teach lessons with clear objectives, modeling and practice WITH concrete materials and multiple representations. I don't think that's the problem. Plus, K-2 NEED concrete materials as they do not think in the abstract yet.
