The UK has 500,000 kilometres of rural road verges PLUS urban ones!
57 plant species were found on 1 visit to 2 Km of road verge on the urban fringe yesterday along with a range of insects

Climate breakdown is a national security threat.
Nature loss puts our food, water, health, economy and stability at risk.
The Government no longer has the luxury of time. We need urgent action and a dedicated Climate Protection Unit.
We need a Number 10 for the future.
Another busy week with three big stories out today!
First up, my story reporting that this year's summer was the UK's hottest on record has made the front page. The Met Office said this was made 130 times more likely by the climate crisis.

And now I’m here, having a wander by the canal in Gas Street Basin, Birmingham. I’ve moored my boat right here several times and loved it. This place has the most wonderful Victorian feel. The gorgeous buildings by the canal and the pubs, make it a very special place. You do have to be careful if you’ve had a few drinks, not to step straight off the towpath and into the canal. Sadly, a number of people have over the years.

We're calling for a televised emergency briefing on the climate and nature crisis, introduced by the MP, delivered by independent experts.
It's #TimeToStepUp#NationalEmergencyBriefing
This is how I have long foreseen the situation, and I consistently said this on the Guardian comments section from 16 years ago, and before that elsewhere. I think the threat to our societies from the climate and ecological crisis, is far, far greater than has been envisaged for these very reasons.
Britain must prepare for El Niño.
The UK is built for a climate which no longer exists.
We need to grow more of our own food and prepare towns and workplaces for extreme heat.
When climate shocks hit, public power must protect people so profiteers can't exploit crises.
Many parts of southern England measured 0mm of rainfall during July, the first time this has happened since records began in 1871.
The next two weeks don’t offer much hope of rain either with high pressure building back in.
The drought continues.
A forgotten glass bottle might not seem like a big problem, but in hot weather it can increase the risk of fire in dry grass and vegetation.
Before you leave the park, please take all litter home and ensure you leave green spaces exactly as you'd like to find them.
Our parks are home to birds, insects, plants and wildlife that depend on these habitats. Help us keep them and each other safe this summer ❤️
Look at this 😳
The storm currently raging over the Mediterranean is making history right now.
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Off the coast of Antibes – Monaco it has turned into a true lightning bomb. Countless flashes, sometimes more than one per second.
But the real madness started a few hours ago and is still ongoing:
🌀 An extremely rare, powerful and tightly packed mesocyclone is currently active over the Mediterranean.
Inbound (green) and outbound (red) velocities are almost stacked on top of each other. maximwx measured a VROT of around 59 knots (≈ 109 km/h).
This is an exceptionally high value for Europe, and especially for the Mediterranean.
Typical fair-weather waterspouts rarely exceed 30-40 knots. A 59-knot rotational velocity clearly confirms this is a true tornadic waterspout produced by a supercell.
The same cell later produced a second rotation with VROT exceeding 50 knots, and a rare “donut hole” appeared on reflectivity — something almost never seen on European radars.
This is one of the cleanest, strongest and most textbook tornadic waterspout-producing supercells we’ve seen over the Mediterranean in the summer of 2026.
If it had moved inland the damage potential would have been significant, but its track is remaining entirely over water.
The radar data alone is already in the “insane” category.

Fantastic update from our @stwater Minworth Sand Martin Bank 🐦
We’ve already ringed 22 chicks, with more nests still to check! After ringing 38 chicks in total last year, we’re on track to beat that record in 2026.
Great to see all the hard work paying off! 🙌
🦆 Global Birdfair is exactly that!
